Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of London, Josh Berzins! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Merle Walker! The judges for this bout are James Glass, Andrew Berry and Paul Tew.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Walker shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Berzins is trying to defend but Walker finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Berzins wants to improve his position but Walker is controlling well.
Berzins is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Walker's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Walker's back! Berzins has improved his flexibility recently so we will have to see if he can use that to his advantage. Berzins is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Walker is defending well though. Berzins let's go of the attempt for now. I really don't envy Walker right now.
Berzins is working really hard to secure the rear naked choke. Walker defends successfully for a significant amount of time. Both fighters are looking very determined. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Walker manages to reverse the position and now he's in Berzins's guard. Nice work there by Walker.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Walker drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Walker jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Walker is looking to pass into half guard but Berzins pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Berzins is in guard. Berzins might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Berzins is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Berzins wants to pass the guard but Walker is keeping the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Berzins is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Walker has an active guard here but Berzins has managed to pass into half guard.
Berzins is keen to just control but Walker is a slippery customer. Walker is in trouble now - Berzins has advanced to mount! Walker tries to improve his position but Berzins has taken his back! Berzins has a choke - it's sunk in pretty tight... Will Walker tap? No... maybe... yes! He's tapped! Berzins pushes Walker away and gets up to celebrate with his corner!
