Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
30 - 24 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Mickey O Neil! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
16 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Austin Fowler! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Thiago Cunha and Leandro Rodrigues.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A combination from O Neil does no damage. O Neil stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and O Neil wants it to stay on the feet. O Neil misses with an uppercut. O Neil looks to land a left hand but Fowler moved out of range nicely. Fowler looks for a takedown but O Neil sprawls well. Fowler throws out a token jab with nothing on it. O Neil tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Fowler was well out of range. Poor timing from O Neil. Fowler fails with the takedown. Mickey O Neil has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Austin Fowler. O Neil misses with an uppercut. Fowler saw that one coming. Fowler misses with a jab to the body
and O Neil counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. O Neil avoids a lazy jab quite easily. O Neil looks to score with a jab to the body but Fowler is just out of range. Fowler looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. O Neil has been working on his boxing with his coaches at The Warehouse in the buildup to the fight. Fowler takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket. O Neil lands the left hand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fowler ducks down and throws a hook to the body but O Neil moves away. O Neil scores with a jab to the jaw of his opponent. Fowler takes one on the button. Fowler is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two. Fowler closes the distance and clinches up with O Neil, looking for a takedown. Fowler pushes O Neil against the cage but O Neil circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. O Neil scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Fowler shakes his hands off, looking to compose himself, but takes a jab to the jaw whilst he does it. O Neil fakes and then throws a beautiful body shot. Fowler looks a bit winded and takes a step backwards to take a breath. Fowler needs to keep his hands up - O Neil had a free shot at his head there. Fowler misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from O Neil.
O Neil fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Mickey O Neil seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Fowler dives in and grabs O Neil's left leg, looking for a takedown. O Neil pushes down on Fowler's head and hops out. Mickey O Neil is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. O Neil works the jab nicely. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. O Neil tries a head kick but it misses.
Fowler looks shocked there as he takes a right hand to the temple.
Fowler is rocked! O Neil circles and sees the opportunity to plant his feet and throw a really nice straight left hand that drops Fowler to the canvas! Fowler doesn't know where he is but he's trying to survive - O Neil keeps piling on the pressure and forces the referee to step in! This one is aaaaaall over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mickey O Neil! After winning the bout, Mickey O Neil thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
