Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
39 - 22 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Mikio Okita! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Ange Fili! The judges for this bout are Chris Downing, George Francis and Frank Dennis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! A looping hook to the body misses from Okita. Fili does a little dance to reset his feet. A decent looking body kick lands there for Fili. Okita blocks the body kick.
A big right from Okita misses. Fili looks to throw the jab but Okita is out of range. Fili is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Okita circles away from the clinch attempt.
Okita throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Okita walks straight into an uppercut. Luckily it didn't land flush. Okita has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Fili. Fili fails to land with a series of punches.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Fili falls off balance throwing a combination
and Okita counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Fili! The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Okita trying to control the action but Fili is working from the bottom. Okita tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Okita has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Fili is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Okita has just dragged him back down to the mat. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Fili can do anything to dispel that myth. Fili is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first. Okita wants to lay and pray for a moment but Fili keeps working. Fili is trying to buck Okita off. Okita misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Okita wants to lay and pray for a moment but Fili keeps working. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Okita moves into full mount! Fili is in a horrible position here. Okita smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Okita lands a heavy elbow. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Fili trying desperately to get to his feet.
Okita scoring with strikes but Fili is staying in there. Okita looking to finish Fili with some ground and pound. This is bad for Fili! Fili tries to buck Okita off but he can't manage it. Okita lands with some strikes.
Fili is rocked! Okita looking to finish here with some ground and pound. He lands one big shot that has Fili covering up... and two more big strikes land, forcing the referee to step in and put and end to proceedings! This fight is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Mikio Okita! Mikio Okita retains his welterweight title! An out of breath Mikio Okita thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
