PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Phil Willian (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tork Mendez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Phil Willian!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Tork Mendez!
The judges for this bout are Bruno Lombardi, Joseph Jones and John Kavanagh.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Mendez with a body punch. A glancing blow.
Nice takedown defense from Mendez. No joy for Willian on that attempt.
Mendez throws a series of punches but Willian avoids them all with ease.
Mendez thows a body shot but no joy.
Willian closes the distance and clinches up with Mendez, looking for a takedown. Willian pushes Mendez against the cage but Mendez circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Mendez connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Mendez throws a right and a left that both miss.
Willian shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Mendez sprawls well. Mendez wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Willian gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Phil Willian. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Willian dives in and grabs Mendez's left leg, looking for a takedown. Mendez pushes down on Willian's head and hops out.
Willian's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Mendez connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Willian scrambles back to his feet.
Mendez works the jab nicely.
Willian moves out of range of the strikes.
Willian doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Willian shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mendez as he avoids it easily.
Mendez throws a low kick, looking for Willian's leg but Willian calmly moves out of range.

A big right from Mendez misses.
Mendez lands a really nice looking cross but Willian seems unphased.
Mendez scores with a punch to the head.

and Willian counters with a takedown into side control.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.
You can see the frustration on Mendez's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Willian postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Mendez takes a couple of big shots there - the referee warns him that he has to defend himself better.
Willian will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
Mendez is positioning himself to get back to half guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Mendez wants to control but Willian postures up.
Mendez sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
Willian is controlling the pace.
Willian seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Mendez for as long as he can get away with.
Mendez is trying to maintain the position but Willian is very close to passing his half guard.

The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.

Willian seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Mendez does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Willian wants to lay and pray for a moment but Mendez keeps working.

Mendez is looking to control Willian's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Mendez avoid being mounted?

A close round but Tork Mendez will probably get the nod.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!

Willian feints and as Mendez raises his hands in defense, Willian changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.

Phil Willian overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Mendez has a closed guard, preventing Willian from standing up.

Mendez is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Willian defends well.
Willian slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

We're going to have a standup here because Phil Willian wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Mendez lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Willian at a distance.
Mendez throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Willian shoots in looking for a takedown but Mendez manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Willian's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away.
Mendez scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Willian doesn't seem bothered though.

Willian shoots in and bounces Mendez off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.
Mendez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Willian's guard.
Mendez passes Willian's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Mendez is looking to take a break and control but Willian is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Mendez moves nicely into side control.
Willian is trying to control Mendez's posture but Mendez avoids it.

Tork Mendez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Willian has his head slapped from side to side by a 3 punch combination. That must have hurt him.
Willian darts in looking for a takedown but Mendez gets double underhooks and turns Willian into the cage.

Mendez lands punches inside but they're not really causing much damage.
Mendez is working Willian over against the cage.
Willian is working hard here but doesn't seem to be able to control effectively, up against the cage.

Mendez is trying to work for a single leg takedown but Willian pulls him back up using the underhooks.
Willian has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Mendez after a bit of a struggle.

Willian knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Mendez on the ground.

Willian swings around for an armbar but Mendez sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Willian's guard.

Tork Mendez is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Willian looks to be working for a triangle here. Oh, it looks like he might have it! Mendez has picked Willian up and slammed him! Willian can't keep hold of the triangle and Mendez manages to pass to side control!

Phil Willian has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Mendez tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Mendez has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

And that's the end of the fight!
Tork Mendez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Mendez winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
