PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hiruku Matah (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Iivana Jalo (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Matah comes to the cage accompanied by Walker the Texas Ranger Theme. Jalo is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Aino Venna - Waltz to Paris. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Hiruku Matah!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Iivana Jalo!
The judges for this bout are John Roberts, Chad Campbell and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jalo loads up on a big right hand but Matah slips the punch.

Jalo fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Matah manages to avoid it.
Jalo misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Matah.
Jalo connects with a crisp jab.

and Matah counters with a single leg into guard. Jalo didn't expect that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

Matah working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Jalo doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Jalo manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Jalo must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Matah is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Jalo defends well.

Matah might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

My spies in Team Finland inform me that Jalo has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!

Matah is trying hard to land a takedown here. Jalo sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Jalo, as that shot connected.

Jalo bobs and weaves and throws out a fast jab that snaps Matah's head backwards.
Matah walks into a stiff left hand from Jalo.
Jalo throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Matah sees it coming and avoids it easily.

Jalo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Matah swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Iivana Jalo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Jalo throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Iivana Jalo is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Matah scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Matah tries to pass the half guard into mount. Jalo knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

Matah is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

Matah is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Jalo still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Jalo has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

Matah manages to work his way to half guard, despite Jalo's best efforts.

Matah has a hand on Jalo's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Jalo takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!

Matah is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Matah here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Iivana Jalo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. And we move into the final round!


Matah takes one on the chin but seems OK.

Jalo changes levels and scores with a jab to the body.

Jalo misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Matah.
Jalo fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Matah manages to avoid it.

Matah uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Jalo.

Jalo is using his reach advantage to land shots from outside his opponent's range.
Jalo on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those.
Matah shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Jalo as he avoids it easily.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

With the fighters clinched against the cage, Jalo creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.


Matah is rocked!
Jalo throws a big uppercut that drops Matah! More strikes from Jalo and the referee jumps in to stop the fight! Matah lies dazed against the cage as Jalo celebrates with his cornermen!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Iivana Jalo!
After winning the bout, Iivana Jalo thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
In defeat, Hiruku Matah stepped up to the mic, saying 'Bah!'.
