PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jason Shono (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lyndon Russell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Lyndon Russell was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jason Shono!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Lyndon Russell!
The judges for this bout are Radbod Blank, Nard Betker and Paulsen Ambrosius.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Russell fails with the takedown.
Shono displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Russell.
Shono throws a body kick but he was well out of range there.

Russell drives through with a takedown into guard.
Russell wants to stand but Shono is controlling his posture from full guard.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Russell is standing up over Shono. Shono looks to escape but Russell dives into side control.

Russell stands up.
Shono throws a quick head kick that skims the top of Russell's head.


It looks like Lyndon Russell has been cut.

Russell fails to pull guard.
Jason Shono has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Lyndon Russell.
Russell is trying to pull guard but Shono has him pressed against the cage.
Russell blocks an elbow strike from Shono.
Russell is looking to take this one to the mat.

We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Russell can do anything to dispel that myth.
Shono is looking to stand up but Russell won't let him.

Russell is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Shono presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat.

Russell gets control of Shono's arms and successfully pulls guard. Russell will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Shono wants to stand but Russell has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Russell has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Shono is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
Shono gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head.

Russell successfully pulls guard.
Shono wants to stand and escape but instead Russell has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Shono is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.

Russell gets to his feet. Shono looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son!
Shono tries to close the distance and clinch up but Russell swats him away and circles back towards the center.
Shono pivots as if he's going to throw a leg kick but stops half way.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Shono is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Shono tries a head kick but it misses.
Shono tries to clinch but Russell moves out of range.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.

Russell shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Shono as he avoids it easily.

Russell shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Shono's guard.
Shono is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Russell is controlling him.

Russell decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Shono, up you get!
Russell has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

Shono stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Shono wants it to stay on the feet.

Russell feints and as Shono raises his hands in defense, Russell changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Russell is breathing heavily.
Shono is looking to stand up but Russell isn't so interested in that idea.
Shono trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful.

Russell decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.
A slapping body kick lands there for Shono.

Russell avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Russell fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
Shono throws a body kick that misses.
Russell looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Shono is fending him off so far but Russell persists. Nope, Shono circles away and we're back to standing.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Russell looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.

Russell drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Russell won't allow Shono to get back to his feet.
Shono is looking to stand back up but Russell counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Shono.
Shono is trying to stand up here but Russell is controlling him well.

Russell is trying to get back to his feet now but his leg is trapped.
Shono tries to kick Russell off but Russell keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Russell postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Shono to stand up.
Russell looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Shono is fending him off so far but Russell persists. Nope, Shono circles away and we're back to standing.
Shono pushes Russell away with a front kick.
Russell avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Russell shoots in looking for a takedown. Shono tries to sprawl out of it but Russell keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Shono manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
No luck with that takedown attempt from Russell.
Russell takes a head kick and keeps coming.

Russell closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Shono quickly recovers to half guard.
Shono is trying to stand.

Russell decides to return to a standing position.
Russell swats away the attempt to clinch by Shono.
Shono tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Shono moves to clinch but Russell breaks away

and Russell counters into the clinch. Nicely done.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jason Shono will probably get the nod.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Shono would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.

Russell blocks a head kick by Shono.
Russell avoids the head kick by Shono.
Russell swats away the attempt to clinch by Shono.
Shono tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Shono leaves Russell with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Shono looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.

Lyndon Russell is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
The fight stays on the outside here - Shono looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Shono doesn't manage to clinch there - Russell circles away.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Shono.
Russell avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Russell moves out of range as Shono throws a body kick.
Russell takes a head kick and shrugs it off.


Russell is rocked!
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Russell changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Shono tries to avoid it but Russell manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Shono to the ground. Shono escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Russell is still on wobbly legs! Can Shono finish him?
Shono pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Shono stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Shono wants it to stay on the feet.
Shono looks for a left high kick but can't connect. Shono backs up to catch a breather... no he lunges forward with a huge flying knee that smacks Russell's temple! It sends Russell violently to the canvas! The crowd goes nuts as Shono celebrates and the doctors try to help Russell!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:45 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Flying Knee). Jason Shono!
