Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, James Howlett! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Juninho Ribeiro Reis! The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Edson Gomes and Mauricio Rocha.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Howlett shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Ribeiro Reis not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Ribeiro Reis is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully. Howlett trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Howlett won't allow Ribeiro Reis to sweep him here. Howlett trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Ribeiro Reis working a defensive guard but Howlett passes into half guard.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Howlett drops an elbow to the side of Ribeiro Reis's head. Howlett is nestled in close to Ribeiro Reis, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Howlett tries to pass the half guard into mount. Ribeiro Reis knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Ribeiro Reis tries to get to full guard but Howlett has control of the leg. Howlett has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. Ribeiro Reis trying to control here.
Howlett lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Howlett working Ribeiro Reis over with strikes. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Howlett working over Ribeiro Reis with some ground and pound. Ribeiro Reis looks like he wants out of this position, which is understandable. Howlett is nestled in close to Ribeiro Reis, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Ribeiro Reis is looking to control Howlett's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Ribeiro Reis avoid being mounted?
That's one minute gone in the round. Ribeiro Reis works his way to full guard. Good work. Howlett scoring with punches to the head and body. Howlett with a nice head shot there. Ribeiro Reis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Howlett. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Howlett missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Howlett makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard. Howlett stands and throws Ribeiro Reis's legs to the side, diving into side control. Howlett connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Ribeiro Reis some visible discomfort.
Howlett gets to mount! Ribeiro Reis was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly. Howlett with good strikes from the mount here! Ribeiro Reis is trying to escape the mount.
Howlett raining down shots from the mount! Howlett looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Ribeiro Reis is rocked! Howlett cracks Ribeiro Reis with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Ribeiro Reis is still in real trouble! Can Howlett finish him?
That's two minutes gone in the round. Howlett landing strikes from the mount and Ribeiro Reis is in trouble! A big strike lands for Howlett! That's really hurt Ribeiro Reis and he's turned his back - Howlett keeps firing away and the ref dives in to stop the fight! Howlett Jumps to his feet to celebrate the victory!
