PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Leroy Reyes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Lars Erickson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Leroy Reyes!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Lars Erickson!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Cecil Peabody and Stewart Dunkirk.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Erickson drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Erickson wants to control from the top but Reyes keeps moving.

My spies in 11th Planet Fitness ($300/wk) inform me that Erickson has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends!
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Lars Erickson hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Reyes keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.

Erickson closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Erickson lands in his opponent's guard.

Erickson is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Reyes is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Reyes has escaped and now he's on top!

Reyes tries to get to full guard but Erickson has control of the leg.

Erickson has freed up his trapped foot and advances to mount.

Erickson swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Reyes is now in Erickson's guard. A big mistake from Erickson there, giving up the dominant position!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Erickson is looking to take a break and control but Reyes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Erickson in particular looking to stall.

Reyes misses with a takedown

and Erickson counters with a takedown into side control.
You can see the frustration on Reyes's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Erickson throws an elbow but Reyes slips to the side and avoids it well.
Reyes wants to control but Erickson postures up.
Erickson wants to stand but Reyes is controlling his arm.
Reyes tries to control but Erickson manages to take his back.

Erickson is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Reyes has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!

Reyes looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment.
I really don't envy Reyes right now.

Erickson is staying calm and holding on to the back position, whilst working on a rear naked choke. Reyes is defending well though. Erickson let's go of the attempt for now.

Lars Erickson is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Well Erickson has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
