Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Almiro Baros! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jake Smith! The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Alexandre Firmino and Matheus Silva.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Smith darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Smith stalling away here and it's allowed Baros to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Baros is looking for a triangle but Smith pushes his legs off easily.
Baros pulls Smith in to control the position. Baros has a closed guard, preventing Smith from standing up. Smith throws a big right hand that misses.
That's one minute gone in the round. Baros keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully. Baros trying to control the position.
Jake Smith has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Baros is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Baros gets caught napping as Smith dives in and scores a takedown. Baros manages to retain guard. Baros keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Baros lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Smith! Baros with some aggressive grappling here. He's looking for submissions here, rather than waiting for the opportunity to counter.
Baros connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Baros. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Baros wants to finish this one by submission but Smith is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Baros. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Baros wants to control the pace but Smith is squirming around nicely. Smith really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith regains half guard. Baros is looking for a kimura here.
Still in half guard, Baros seems content to control. Baros is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Baros wants to work for an arm triangle but Smith is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Smith manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Baros keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage. Baros has clasped his hands together around Smith's back... aaand, he's got a takedown into side control. Nicely done. Baros is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Smith is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Baros tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Smith is looking for a sweep. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Almiro Baros dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Smith drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Smith wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Baros's closed guard. He's half up but Baros has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Baros pivots and extends the arm, Smith falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Baros! Well done that man!
