The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Persson tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Diaz is looking to take this fight into the clinch. Persson works over Diaz's head and body with a nice combination. Diaz closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Persson to the mat! Persson manages to get full guard. Diaz is looking to work some ground and pound but Persson has wrist control. Persson has his foot on Diaz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Diaz works his way back into a safe position though. Diaz won't allow Persson to sweep him here. Diaz loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Persson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Diaz is one step ahead there. Diaz stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Persson swivels though and keeps the full guard.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground. Persson shoots in but doesn't get the takedown and Diaz counters with a nice leg kick. Persson looks gassed!
That's one minute gone in the round. Persson gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Persson looking to hit a scissor sweep but Diaz is one step ahead there. Persson has his foot on Diaz's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Diaz works his way back into a safe position though. Diaz wants to stand but Persson has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Diaz wants to pass the guard but Persson is keeping the position. That's two minutes gone in the round. Diaz sitting in guard, not really doing much. Persson is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Persson looks for the body kick but Diaz saw that one coming. Persson tries to clinch and Diaz counters with a single leg into guard. Persson didn't expect that. Persson looking to control.
Diaz drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Diaz jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

A much better position for Persson. Persson wants to sweep here but Diaz controlling him for the moment. Diaz is looking to work some ground and pound but Persson has wrist control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so. Diaz trying to pass the guard. He's being very persistent here but Persson manages to land a sweep and now he's on top! Diaz trying to strike off his back.
Diaz knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Persson on the ground. Persson trying to control but Diaz is working from the bottom. Diaz looking to hit a scissor sweep but Persson is one step ahead there. Persson seems content to control from guard here. Persson manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Persson throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage. Persson wants to control but Diaz is keeping him busy. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Persson connects with a nice short shot to Diaz's temple.

Persson controlling the pace for now. Persson looking to control but Diaz is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Persson swings around for an armbar but it's a sloppy attempt and Diaz is now in Persson's guard. A big mistake from Persson there, giving up the dominant position! Persson wants to control but Diaz passes easily into half guard.

Persson knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Persson can do anything to dispel that myth. Persson wants to control but Diaz is keeping busy and won't allow it. Persson is looking to escape. Diaz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Persson keeps working. Persson trying to control but Diaz postures up.

Diaz fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Persson sprawls well initially but Diaz persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Diaz content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Diaz trying to control the action but Persson is working from the bottom. Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Persson throws a left and a right that both miss
and Diaz counters with a takedown into side control. Diaz working away. Persson is not content to let Diaz control the position. Persson sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Persson regains full guard. Nicely done. Diaz throws a big right hand that misses. Persson pushes Diaz off for just long enough to get back to his feet. Very athletic spring there. Persson wants to clinch.

Persson wants the takedown. Diaz is fighting it off but Persson persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Diaz's guard against the cage. Persson throwing strikes but missing. Diaz has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Persson can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Persson throws a big right hand that misses. Persson passes Diaz's left leg - he's now in half guard. Persson thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Diaz's head. Sten Persson has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
