PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between William Barker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and George Droop (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barker's entrance music is The Way of the Fist - Five Finger Death Punch. A fine choice. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 31 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, William Barker!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 14 - 1, fighting out of Tokyo, George Droop!
The judges for this bout are Shigeki Fujiwara, Taro Takaoka and Yasuomi Hirokawa.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Barker showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Droop.
That kick from Droop tenderised Barker's leg. Barker is trying to keep his angry face on.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
An uppercut on the inside fails to land for Barker.
Droop is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.
Droop prevents a takedown attempt there.
A hook to the body from Droop.
Barker has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Droop after a bit of a struggle.
Droop taking a breather.
Droop misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Droop pushes off an throws an elbow but Barker leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the ropes.
Droop lands a shoulder strike.

Barker jumps guard and drags Droop to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Droop postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Droop throwing strikes but missing.
Droop seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Droop trying to control the position from guard on top but Barker is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Droop postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Droop tries to free his leg and advance position but Barker is retaining full guard.

Barker working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Droop doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Droop manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Droop is looking to work some ground and pound but Barker has wrist control.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.
Barker wants to stand but Droop is controlling the position.
Droop scores with a decent looking elbow strike.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Droop controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

Barker looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Droop loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Droop's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Barker wants to sweep here but Droop controlling him for the moment.
The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now.
Droop controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Droop stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Barker swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Droop is looking to work some ground and pound but Barker has wrist control.
Droop throws a strike but Barker rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Barker accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Barker trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Droop wants to sweep here but Barker controlling him for the moment.
Droop trying to keep a closed guard but Barker is proving a slippery customer.
We've been hearing good reports from Barker's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.
Droop looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Droop lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Barker!
Barker is in all sorts of trouble here.
Droop throwing strikes here but Barker is writhing around nicely and avoiding any serious damage.
Barker is trying to escape the mount.

Droop is in the full mount, landing strikes.
Barker slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Droop is looking to take a break and control but Barker is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
The fighters are tangled up in the ropes here. We might need a restart if the fighters can't break free themselves.
Droop throwing shots but Barker is blocking nicely.
Droop wants to control but Barker is keeping him busy.
Barker wants to get back to his feet.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Barker is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Droop pulls his head out easily.
Barker tries to roll over but Droop keeps him under control.
Barker is working hard here to advance position.

That's five minutes gone in the round.
Droop wants to take a breather but Barker is having none of it.
Barker blocking the ground and pound attempt from Droop.
Barker is trying to defend against the ground and pound but Droop scores with a couple of nice shots.
Barker keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound.
Droop wants to lay and pray for a moment but Barker keeps working.
Droop controlling the pace.
Droop working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.
Droop looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Droop is nestled in close to Barker, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure.

That's six minutes gone in the round.
Droop seems to be taking a bit of a break to think of his next move. He lands a short punch in the meantime.
Droop not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
Droop missing with the ground and pound from half guard.

Barker has hold of a guillotine but he's not going to be able to crank on it really with only half guard, so it's no trouble for Droop. Oh but Barker has got full guard now! Oh boy! This one could be over very soon! Droop goes limp - he's gone! Barker jumps up and celebrates with the crowd - fantastic submission finish!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 6:41 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). William Barker!
In his post fight interview, William Barker started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
