Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Tero Elo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
17 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Mike Laid! The judges for this bout are George Francis, Cecil Peabody and Stewart Dunkirk.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Laid is trying hard to land a takedown here. Elo sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Elo tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Laid swivels and escapes. Laid fails with the takedown. Laid shoots in but no luck this time. Tero Elo has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mike Laid. Laid shoots in and drives through. Elo sprawls well. Laid closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Elo did well to prevent Laid getting side control. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Elo tries to roll over but Laid keeps him under control. My spies in GnP Factory Elite Gym inform me that Laid has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! Elo is working hard here to advance position. Elo has a hand on Laid's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Laid takes advantage of the position though and mounts him! Laid is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Elo can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Elo sneaks a leg back under and regains half guard and is working straight away to try and get back to guard. He hasn't managed just yet though. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Laid is working for a kimura but Elo is defending it quite comfortably.
Elo tries to roll over but Laid keeps him under control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Elo works his way to full guard. Good work. Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Laid is working Elo over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Elo bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Laid's guard. Elo might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground. Elo looking to sit in guard and control but Laid gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. We've been hearing good reports from Elo's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Elo is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Laid is aware though and is defending well. Laid thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Laid postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Laid throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Elo works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Laid stands over his opponent and dives in with a flying punch! Elo throws up his legs and catches Laid in a triangle! Oh this looks tight! Laid tries to escape but he's forced to tap! Wow, fantastic work there by Elo! That came out of nowhere!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Tero Elo! Tero Elo made sure to give a little speech post fight, saying 'Let the big, bad, black motherfucker go!'.
