And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Yen thumps Matthews with a low kick.

Matthews fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Yen to the ground. Matthews is now in Yen's guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.

Matthews postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Yen is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Matthews, into his guard.
Yen landing some decent shots from guard.

Matthews is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Yen defends well.
Yen trying to control but Matthews is working from the bottom.
Yen pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Matthews is keeping the position for now.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Matthews looking for a guillotine here but Yen defends easily.

Matthews has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Yen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Yen slips effortlessly into side control - very nice.

Yen wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Matthews, who protects the arm well.
Yen tries to advance to mount but Matthews denies him.
Matthews is trying to get back to half guard.
Yen is looking to take a break and control but Matthews is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Matthews tries to improve position but can't.

Yen thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Yen trying to control the position but Matthews is working away.

Matthews is looking to regain half guard here but Yen keeps moving and retains side control.

Yen is trying to get an arm triangle but Matthews is defending well.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Matthews wants to get back to his feet.

Yen decides to take the fight back to the feet.
Yen stalks Matthews and leaps in with a furious combination of punches. Uppercuts and crosses smash into Matthews's face. Matthews staggers backwards, shaken.


It looks like Eric Matthews has been cut.
Yen fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Donnie Yen seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Matthews feints and as Yen raises his hands in defense, Matthews changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Yen is trying to keep Matthews in close.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Matthews trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Yen wants to stand and escape but Matthews is having none of it.
Yen is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Matthews looking for submissions off his back.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Matthews is looking to escape.
Matthews is breathing heavily.

Yen has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Matthews defend it? Yen steps over the head and cranks it - Matthews is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Yen!
