PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jake Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Andres Santiago (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jake Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Andres Santiago!
The judges for this bout are Leandro Rodrigues, Paulo Santos and Felipe Paraventi.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Smith.
Smith tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Santiago paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Smith takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Smith is defended easily by Santiago.
Santiago pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Santiago tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Santiago shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Smith's guard.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Santiago distracts Smith with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Santiago throws a big elbow that misses.
Santiago chips away with some ground and pound.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Smith is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Smith is trying to keep Santiago in close.
Santiago would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Smith pulls Santiago in close to prevent any damage.
Santiago lands a couple of elbows.
Santiago has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Santiago throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Smith works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Smith wants to stand but Santiago is controlling the position.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Santiago accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Smith trying to strike from the bottom but really, it's not the best position to be doing that from!
Santiago landing with the ground and pound.
Santiago working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Smith pushes Santiago off and scrambles back to his feet.
Smith is breathing heavily.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Santiago is looking to clinch but Smith is avoiding it.

Smith darts in and clinches Santiago up against the cage.

Santiago gets control of Smith's arms and successfully pulls guard. Santiago will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Santiago wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Santiago is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Santiago is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Smith wanted to stand there but Santiago had control of the position.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Santiago is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Santiago wants to improve his position but instead Smith has moved into half guard.
Smith tries to pass to full mount but Santiago defends it.
Smith stops Santiago from getting back to his feet.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Santiago is trying to get back to full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith controlling the action here.
The fighters are battling for position here. Santiago manages to regain full guard. Nice work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Andres Santiago dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Smith throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Santiago.
Smith shoots in and drives through. Santiago sprawls well.
Santiago throws a front kick that sends Smith stumbling back into the cage.
Smith fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Smith tries to score a power double leg takedown but Santiago sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Smith somewhat.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Smith. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Santiago lands with an uppercut that bounces Smith off the cage and back into range.

Santiago closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Santiago decides to stand up, so the ref orders Smith to his feet.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Santiago lands a jab followed by a nice looking cross.
Santiago displaying good standup as he scores with a three punch combination.


Smith is rocked!

That's one minute gone in the round.
Santiago thows a body kick. Smith tries to catch it but that hurt him.
Oh Smith is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Santiago throws a powerful right kick. Smith tried to block low but the kick was high! Smith was taken right off of his feet! Santiago jumps in to finish the job and the ref tackles him! The fight is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:09 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Andres Santiago!
