Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
46 - 26 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Tony Mendez! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
29 - 22 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hoy Nelson! The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Dean Styles and Jonathan Paton.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendez darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Nelson pushes Mendez off looking to stand but Mendez dives back in and keeps control.
Mendez missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Mendez looking to pass the half guard. Not this time. Mendez slows the pace down in half guard. Mendez tries to pass the half guard into mount. Nelson knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Mendez will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Nelson keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Mendez thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Nelson's head.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendez wants to free his trapped foot but Nelson is holding on for dear life with his legs. Nelson scrambles, trying to get to his feet, but Mendez manages to mount him!
Nelson is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. Mendez thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Nelson is really trying hard to get back to his feet.
We've been hearing good reports from Mendez's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Mendez sends his fist crashing into the mat - the crowd let out a collective ooooooh. Let's hope he's not broken it! Mendez unloads with some shots from mount but Nelson bucks and avoids them well.
Mendez is landing with some decent strikes but Nelson is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Mendez throws a strike there. Nelson manages to avoid it well and slips a leg under to get to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Nelson is not content to let Mendez control the position. Mendez is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Nelson is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. This has been an exciting period of action! Nelson is trying to stand up here but Mendez is controlling him well. Nelson is not content to let Mendez control the position. Mendez throwing shots but Nelson is blocking nicely. Mendez is stalling here. Nelson is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Mendez seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Nelson has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work. Mendez tries to buck Nelson off but Nelson is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Nelson trying to control the position but Mendez is working away. Mendez is trying to improve his position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mendez manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Mendez is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Nelson is thwarting Mendez's attempts to control the position. Mendez is looking to get back to full guard here but Nelson has managed to pass to side control instead. Nelson throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage. Mendez is looking for a sweep. Nelson trying to control the position but Mendez is working away. Mendez has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Mendez is looking to reverse the position. Mendez manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Tony Mendez dominated that round. That's time! Mendez's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
A low kick from Mendez misses and Nelson counters with a nice body kick.
Nelson takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming. A head kick by Nelson misses and Mendez counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Nelson! Mendez advances nicely into full mount. Mendez unloads with some shots from mount but Nelson bucks and avoids them well.
Nelson wriggling around on the bottom manages to avoid the strikes thrown by Mendez.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Mendez thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Mendez looking to ground and pound his opponent to a finish here.
Nelson is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. Mendez postures up and cracks his opponent a couple of times before moving back into close ground control. Nelson looks a forlorn figure.

That's one minute gone in the round. Nelson is bucking up trying to escape but Mendez cracks him with another couple of good strikes.
Nelson is rocked! Mendez lands a heavy shot. That's hurt Nelson! Mendez sees the opportunity and turns up the heat - strike after strike land to the defenseless Nelson and the ref dives in to save him! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:32 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Tony Mendez! A very excited looking Tony Mendez rambled incoherently for about 5 minutes post fight about how awesome he is. It was kinda funny for a while but then everyone got annoyed.
