Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Sabhmir Tournament! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jon Jonen! The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Konstantin Menshow and Valeri Chadov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Tournament doesn't succeed with the takedown so Jonen counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Jonen loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Jonen missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Tournament looking to control.
Jonen wants to control from the top but Tournament keeps moving. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Jonen accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Tournament has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Jonen can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Jonen trying to control but Tournament is working from the bottom. Jonen is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Jonen throws an elbow that misses. Tournament uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jonen's guard. Nice move by Tournament! Tournament wants to control from the top but Jonen keeps moving. Jonen controls Tournament momentarily but Tournament frees himself. Tournament has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Tournament could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Tournament wants to control from the top but Jonen keeps moving. Tournament throws a big right hand that misses.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Jonen lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Tournament! Jonen looking to secure an arm triangle but Tournament defends it well. Jonen working for a submission but Tournament is keeping him at bay. Tournament gets back to half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Tournament is trying to get back to full guard. Tournament is trying to control but can't.
Jonen wants to control but Tournament is keeping him busy. Jonen looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Tournament with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Tournament wants to improve his position but Jonen is controlling well.
Jonen is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Tournament is not content to let Jonen control the position. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Tournament kicks Jonen off and gets back to his feet. Tournament scores with a crisp jab that stopped Jonen in his tracks. This has been an exciting period of action! Jonen stuffs the takedown attempt from Tournament. Tournament gets slowly back to his feet. Jonen misses with a left hand and Tournament counters with a right hand to the body. Tournament takes a jab right on the nose. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Tournament takes a punch to the jaw and another one to the bread basket.
It looks like Sabhmir Tournament has been cut. Jonen closes the distance and lands a one-two. Jonen scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Tournament is breathing heavily. Tournament is staying active underneath Jonen, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Jonen controlling the action here. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! The fighters are battling for position here. Tournament manages to regain full guard. Nice work. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jon Jonen dominated that round. The cut man is working on Sabhmir Tournament's cut. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.
Tournament steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Jonen. Jonen ducks under a wild hook from Tournament. Tournament dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Jonen. That did some damage! Tournament feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Jonens jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist! Jonen blocks a leg kick. Jonen gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Jon Jonen has got the better of the ground game so far. Tournament trying to control but Jonen is working from the bottom. Tournament working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Jonen looking to control.
Tournament postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. Jonen keeping moving, preventing Tournament from controlling successfully.
That's one minute gone in the round. Tournament thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Jonen managing to control the position. Tournament throws a big right hand that misses. Tournament throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Jonen works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Jonen keeping moving, preventing Tournament from controlling successfully. Jonen has control of Tournament's left arm, preventing Tournament from doing any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. We must be close to a standup if these guys don't pick up the pace. Jonen keeping moving, preventing Tournament from controlling successfully.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Tournament throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Jonen. Tournament takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.
Jonen looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard. Tournament tries to roll over but Jonen keeps him under control. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Jonen seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Tournament does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Jonen scores with a couple of good hammerfists. Tournament moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Jonen throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Tournament works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Tournament looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Tournament avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Tournament avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Jonen lands a couple of decent looking shots. Jonen avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Jonen wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Tournament's closed guard. He's half up but Tournament has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Tournament pivots and extends the arm, Jonen falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Tournament! Well done that man!
