Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Clinton Roy! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Nathan Varquez! The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Ryoma Takatsuka and Paul Gruel.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Varquez feints and as Roy raises his hands in defense, Varquez changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Roy has a closed guard, preventing Varquez from standing up. Varquez working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Roy keeping full guard, as Varquez tries to pass. Varquez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Varquez trying to stand up but can't free himself from Roy's guard. Varquez sitting in guard, not really doing much. Roy throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.

That's one minute gone in the round. Roy trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage. Roy preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Roy is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Varquez gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Varquez pushes Roy up against the cage in a clinch. Varquez successfully pulls guard.

Roy wants to stand but Varquez is controlling his posture from full guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Roy postures up in Varquez's guard and throws a big left but Varquez blocks it. Varquez being controlled here, momentarily. Roy trying to control the position from guard on top but Varquez is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref stands the fighters back up. Clinton Roy wasn't doing enough on the ground. Varquez gets a takedown into half guard. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Varquez controlling the action here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Varquez throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Roy wants to control but Varquez is keeping busy and won't allow it. Roy pushes Varquez off and gets back to his feet. Varquez has taken the fight to the clinch.
Roy jumps guard but Varquez stands there with Roy around his waist. Roy gives up and drops back to his feet. We remain in the clinch.
Varquez ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Varquez no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Roy in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Roy wanted to stand there but Varquez had control of the position. Varquez looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Roy postures up.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Roy is stalling in the full guard. Varquez wants to get back to his feet but Roy is in a dominant position and won't allow it. Roy really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Varquez throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Roy was covering up waiting for the punch and Varquez finishes the takedown easily into guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Roy working a defensive guard here.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Roy utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Roy is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Nathan Varquez dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Varquez has managed to clinch.
Roy goes for a takedown attempt but Varquez pushes him away and we're back to fighting at a distance.

That's one minute gone in the round. Varquez thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Roy's head. Varquez throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man. Varquez is trying to work for a kimura but Roy is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Varquez is thwarting Roy's attempts to control the position. Varquez thows a huge punch but Roy dodges it nicely.

Roy is trying to stand up here but Varquez is controlling him well. Varquez is thwarting Roy's attempts to control the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up because Clinton Roy just wasn't active enough. Varquez gets a clinch. Varquez taking a breather. Varquez landing knees to the body. They look like they could hurt.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Varquez content to slow the pace in the clinch.
Still in the clinch, Varquez scores with a nice short uppercut. Roy takes a knee right on the jaw!
Varquez lands a body punch - he's looking to wear down Roy. Roy manages to pull guard.
Varquez gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent. Varquez pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Varquez darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Varquez controlling the pace. Roy is trying to control but can't.
Varquez stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being. Roy moves into the clinch successfully.
Roy is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Varquez gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt. Roy is trying to break free. Varquez breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Varquez gets the takedown into side control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Roy is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Varquez off and has taken his back! Varquez has the hand control, trying to stop the rear naked choke. Roy is striking from the back but Varquez escapes and manages to recover to half guard. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Varquez tries to get to full guard but Roy has control of the leg. Roy is trying to control the action in half guard but Varquez is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Roy looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Roy will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Roy is trying to work for a kimura but Varquez is defending well.

Nathan Varquez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. The crowd applaud as we get ready to start the final round!

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up. Roy uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Varquez. Varquez moves into the clinch. Roy ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Roy no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard. Varquez in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Varquez is looking to work some ground and pound but Roy has wrist control. Roy utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Nathan Varquez has got the better of the ground game so far. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Roy drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Roy jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Varquez utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Roy missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Varquez is trying to keep Roy in close.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Varquez keeping moving, preventing Roy from controlling successfully. Clinton Roy has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Nathan Varquez is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
We're going to have a standup here because Clinton Roy wasn't active enough for the referee's liking. Varquez shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Varquez was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
And that's the end of the fight! Nathan Varquez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard. Well Varquez has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
