Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Jack Cherry (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Thomas Untaka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Untaka has chosen Jimi Hendrix - Purple Haze as his entrance music. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Thomas Untaka!
The judges for this bout are David Schapiro, Jorge Garcia and Eddie Farnsworth.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Untaka darts in trying to clinch

and Cherry counters with a nice double leg into side control. Untaka won't be happy with that.
Untaka tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Cherry presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Cherry connects with a nice short shot to Untaka's temple.

Untaka tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Cherry defends well and Untaka ends up having to push Cherry into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Cherry here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Untaka is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Cherry asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Untaka felt the need to train up his defensive grappling in the buildup to the fight. Presumably he was expecting to be in a difficult position like this, so let's see if he can get out of it.

Untaka is looking for a sweep. Cherry is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Untaka throws a strike from the bottom but Cherry passes into side control!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Untaka regains half guard, as Cherry was trying to land strikes.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Cherry wants to take a breather but Untaka is having none of it.
Cherry seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Untaka is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Thomas Untaka hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jack Cherry.
Well I reckon that's a shut out for Cherry, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
