PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Max Thatcher (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Joe Orange (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Max Thatcher!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Joe Orange!
The judges for this bout are Donatello Bradman, Damien Edna and Bruno Hogan.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Thatcher closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.
Orange regains half guard there - taking advantage of Thatcher's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.

Thatcher wants to work for an arm triangle but Orange is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
Orange is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Thatcher's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Thatcher's back!

Orange has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Thatcher has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
Thatcher rolls and manages to get back to half guard. Nicely done.
Thatcher gets back to full guard.
Thatcher wants to stand but Orange is controlling the position.
Orange trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Thatcher doesn't do any damage with a couple of strikes from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Orange pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Thatcher is keeping the position for now.

Thatcher looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.

Orange is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Orange must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Orange drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Thatcher dives on top into guard.
Thatcher sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Orange's guard.
Orange looks gassed!
Orange is looking for a sweep. Thatcher is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
Thatcher wants to take a breather but Orange is having none of it.

Thatcher thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Orange's head.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Thatcher wants to lay and pray for a moment but Orange keeps working.

Orange is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Thatcher pulls his head out easily.
Orange wants to control but Thatcher is keeping busy and won't allow it.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Thatcher lands a jab to Orange's midsection.
Thatcher doesn't manage to clinch there - Orange circles away.
Thatcher fails with a takedown attempt.

Orange gets a clinch.

Orange has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Thatcher clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
A lull in the action here.

Thatcher is displaying good submission defense - not really looking in danger of submitting to the rear naked choke at the moment. That could change in an instant of course if Orange gets his way!
Orange doesn't have the hooks in and Thatcher manages to turn into his guard.

Thatcher has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Orange is proving hard to escape from.

That was a close round but I would say that Max Thatcher will probably get the nod.

Thatcher shoots in for a takedown but Orange shows good takedown defense.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Thatcher.
Orange shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Thatcher but Thatcher pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Orange throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Orange closes the distance and lands a one-two.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Orange shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in full mount! That's better than Orange was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Orange takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Thatcher tries to lock up and control but Orange gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.

Thatcher is looking to improve his position but Orange isn't that keen on the idea.

Orange wants to control the pace but Thatcher is squirming around nicely.
Orange prevents Thatcher from getting the reversal.

Orange looks like he's working for a submission but he's not found anything just yet.
Thatcher wants to hold on but Orange pushes him away.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Orange looking to control but Thatcher is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Thatcher tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Orange fakes a shot to the body and cracks his opponent in the head. Nice ground and pound there!

Orange moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Thatcher has worked his arm free - good work by Thatcher!
Orange wants to lay and pray for a moment but Thatcher keeps working.
Thatcher is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Orange off and has taken his back!
Thatcher throws a big right hand but he misses and hits the mat. Ouch.
Thatcher is hanging on to Orange's back as he tries to escape.
Thatcher lands punches and elbows.
Orange can't escape the position.
Orange manages to reverse the position and now he's in Thatcher's guard. Nice work there by Orange.

Thatcher working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Orange doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Orange manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

Thatcher is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Thatcher moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Thatcher misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Thatcher doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Orange counters with a nice double leg into half guard.
Thatcher wants to improve his position but Orange is controlling well.
Thatcher is working hard here to advance position.
Orange uses his free foot to push down on Thatcher's thigh. Eventually he works his other foot free and he's advanced to mount - this is trouble for Thatcher.
Orange content just to control the position here.
Thatcher is squirming around, avoiding Orange's attempts to control the action.

Joe Orange comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Orange has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
