Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
29 - 26 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Joe Calzaghe! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
14 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Gabriel Rua! The judges for this bout are Yuuki Gou, Yasuomi Hirokawa and Taro Takaoka.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Calzaghe closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Rua quickly recovers to half guard. Calzaghe is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Calzaghe is thwarting Rua's attempts to control the position. Calzaghe is looking for a kimura here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Rua is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Calzaghe is looking for a kimura here.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Rua is looking for a sweep. Calzaghe is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Calzaghe is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Rua doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Calzaghe. We've been hearing that Calzaghe has been drilling a lot of ground and pound in training, so let's see if he get the finish. Rua manages to get to full guard.
Rua throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Calzaghe escapes and throws Rua's legs to the side, diving into side control! Calzaghe is working Rua over with some ground and pound from side control. Calzaghe tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it. Rua is looking to reverse the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Calzaghe looks up at the clock and then as Rua takes his cue and looks up at the clock too, Calzaghe smacks him right in the chops with a big elbow! How rude!
Calzaghe has hold of Rua's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Rua seems comfortable defending it but Calzaghe has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Rua is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Rua is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Calzaghe couldn't care less - he's delighted!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:18 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Joe Calzaghe! Joe Calzaghe took his opportunity to call for a title shot in his post fight interview. Gabriel Rua was interviewed post fight and said 'For Fucks sake.'.
