Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Rod Stiffington! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Mercicito Gesta! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, David Hoff and Dirk Anderson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gesta connects with a body shot. Gesta throws a combination. Stiffington tries to block but a couple of punches get through. A lazy left from Gesta finds it's target. Stiffington closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. Wow, both these guys are really going for it! Gesta lands a body shot.
Gesta lands a jab-cross combination. Gesta stuffs the takedown. Stiffington looks for a takedown but Gesta sprawls well. Stiffington throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Gesta's waist but Gesta gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Stiffington off to one side. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rod Stiffington. That's going to take a lot out of him. Good standup being displayed there by Gesta as he connects with a hook. Stiffington darts in looking for a takedown but Gesta gets double underhooks and turns Stiffington into the cage. Gesta gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Stiffington.
A short left from Gesta. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Gesta lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Stiffington or not. Stiffington fails to pull the fight into his guard.
A short right from Gesta on the inside. Still in the clinch, Gesta scores with a nice short uppercut. Stiffington tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gesta stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body. Gesta works on Stiffington's body with a couple of short punches. Gesta lands a right hand. A short right hand to the side of the head by Gesta. Gesta scores with an uppercut up the middle. Gesta lands with a short head shot on the inside. Gesta's coach down at Clean and Green was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Gesta's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. Stiffington breaks from the clinch.
Gesta misses with a series of wild punches.
Stiffington takes a shot right to the bread basket. Gesta's jab looks to have found its range, popping Stiffington under the eye. Stiffington dives in for a single leg takedown but Gesta sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Gesta breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Gesta lands a slapping body shot.
Stiffington gets the takedown into side control. Stiffington has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Stiffington tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Gesta tries to escape but Stiffington is in control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Stiffington is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Gesta is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Gesta can do anything to dispel that myth. Stiffington trying to control the position but Gesta is working away. Stiffington is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Gesta has escaped the position, nice work there. Stiffington looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Stiffington has hold of Gesta's arm. He's looking for a kimura. Gesta seems comfortable defending it but Stiffington has shifted his position slighty and is cranking on the arm! Gesta is real pain and he's forced to tap out! Gesta is disgusted with himself for not defending it better but Stiffington couldn't care less - he's delighted!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:17 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Rod Stiffington! A determined Rod Stiffington didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
