PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Dewey Newman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Cain Velasquez (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Velasquez has chosen dos santos vs velasquez as his entrance music. Rumors backstage are that the fighters have been paid to keep it standing but we know that would never happen in MMA!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Dewey Newman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 3 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Cain Velasquez!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Dean Styles and Joseph Jones.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Newman fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Velasquez manages to avoid it.
Velasquez will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Velasquez tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Newman paws at him with a jab and circles away.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Newman is defended easily by Velasquez.
Velasquez goes for a double leg but Newman avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Newman continues to drive forward.

Velasquez pulls guard effortlessly.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Velasquez has his hands on Newman's head, controlling the position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Velasquez bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Newman's guard.

Velasquez is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.
Velasquez has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Newman might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Velasquez is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount!

Velasquez's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Newman swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing.
Velasquez wants to stand but Newman is holding on to him, trying to stop him posturing up.
Newman looking to escape from mount but he's given up his back!
Newman tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Velasquez is trying to take his opponent's back.
Velasquez tries to control but Newman wriggling away.
Newman in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head.
Velasquez tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Newman is trying to escape the mount.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Velasquez controlling the position easily from mount.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cain Velasquez dominated that round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Velasquez tries for a takedown but Newman circles away easily
and Newman counters with a left and a right that stings Velasquez.
Velasquez fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Newman really is a fat lump.
Velasquez throws a sloppy head kick
and Newman counters with a series of strikes. Velasquez will be more careful next time no doubt.
Velasquez misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Newman leaves Velasquez with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Velasquez shoots for a double leg takedown but Newman sprawls well. He's pushed Velasquez's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.
Dewey Newman has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Cain Velasquez.
Velasquez tries to clinch but Newman moves out of range.
Horrible takedown by Velasquez or perhaps it was just good defense by Newman which made him look bad.

Newman misses with a combination

and Velasquez counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Newman!
Velasquez is breathing heavily.
Velasquez tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily.
Newman throws a couple of strikes even though he's not really in a good position to do so.
Velasquez is chipping away with strikes.
Newman is looking for a sweep.

Velasquez tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Velasquez has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Newman manages to work his way to half guard, despite Velasquez's best efforts.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Newman is looking to improve his position.

Newman kicks off Velasquez and gets to his feet.
Velasquez wants to clinch up but Newman keeps it at a distance.
Velasquez throws a one two combo.


It looks like Dewey Newman has been cut.
Velasquez gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Newman counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work.

Velasquez closes the distance but Newman moves to the side
and Newman counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Velasquez thinking.
Velasquez throws a sloppy head kick and Newman moves out of range easily.
Cain Velasquez seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Velasquez misses with a jab, cross combination.

Velasquez moves into range and clinches up with Newman.
Velasquez is pressed up against the cage. Newman has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Velasquez down to the mat. Velasquez avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.
Velasquez closes the distance and clinches up with Newman, looking for a takedown. Velasquez pushes Newman against the cage but Newman circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Velasquez shoots in looking for a takedown. Newman tries to sprawl out of it but Velasquez keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Newman manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Velasquez shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Newman as he jumps to the side.
Newman ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Velasquez moves away.
Newman swings for the body but Velasquez moves out of range.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
A low kick from Velasquez is predictable there
and Newman counters with a straight right hand.
Velasquez fails with a takedown attempt from distance.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Cain Velasquez showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Dewey Newman's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!


Newman loads up on a big right hand but Velasquez slips the punch.
Velasquez tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Newman paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Velasquez works Newman's body with a nice hook.
Velasquez dives in for a single leg takedown but Newman sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Velasquez pulls guard successfully.
Velasquez is pulling down on Newman's head. It's preventing any offense from Newman, at least for the moment.
Newman trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat.
Newman has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Velasquez manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Newman manages to get himself to full guard.

Velasquez looking to pass the guard.
Cain Velasquez has got the better of the ground game so far.
Velasquez's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Newman throwing rabbit punches from the bottom - showing the judges that he's keeping busy.
Newman is striking but Velasquez is not phased and passes to half guard.
Newman is looking for a sweep. Velasquez is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Velasquez looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Newman is trying to maintain the position but Velasquez is very close to passing his half guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Newman tries to roll over but Velasquez keeps him under control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Cain Velasquez was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Velasquez shoots in but no luck this time.

Velasquez shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Newman is trying to defend but Velasquez finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
Velasquez blocks the strikes from Newman.
Velasquez moves into side control, avoiding the strikes from Newman.
Velasquez tries to advance to mount but can't.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Newman is not content to let Velasquez control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Velasquez staying calm.
Velasquez scores with punches from side control.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Dewey Newman has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Cain Velasquez is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Newman manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

And that's the end of the fight!
Cain Velasquez comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Velasquez has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
