PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Grey Worm (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Paul Mars (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Worm's entrance music is Der Kaptain. A fine choice. The crowd seem to be enjoying Mars's choice of entrance music: Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood. Paul Mars told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Worm drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard. Mars wants to sweep but no luck. Mars looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mars can do anything to dispel that myth. Worm pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mars is keeping the position for now. Mars really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Worm. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Worm pushes down on Mars's leg and manages to get into half guard. Worm stalling away here and it's allowed Mars to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Worm postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Worm drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Mars manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Worm has Mars in his guard. Mars trying to stand up but can't free himself from Worm's guard. Worm avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mars sitting in guard here, content to control. Mars postures up.
Mars postures up in Worm's guard and throws a big left but Worm blocks it. Mars stopping the sweep attempt from Worm. Mars chips away with some ground and pound. Mars wants to get up but he can't break Worm's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Worm is actively looking for submissions from his back. He's worked himself a little space on the bottom and seems to be going for a triangle. No, he's switched into an armbar! That was slick! Mars rolls with it to try and escape but Worm cranks on the arm and Mars is forced to tap out! This one is aaaaaaaaall over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Grey Worm!
