Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 3 - 0, fighting out of New York, Virgil Buchanan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Lefty Hall! The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, David Schapiro and Eddie Farnsworth.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Buchanan tries for a takedown but Hall circles away easily and Hall counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Buchanan! The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Buchanan is looking to regain half guard here but Hall keeps moving and retains side control. Hall swings around for an armbar but Buchanan sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Hall's guard. Buchanan won't allow Hall to get back to his feet. Hall pulls Buchanan in close to prevent any damage. Hall looking to hit a scissor sweep but Buchanan is one step ahead there. Buchanan stops Hall from standing up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Buchanan won't allow Hall to sweep him here. Hall wants to stand up but Buchanan is controlling him. Buchanan throwing strikes but missing. Buchanan will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Buchanan wants to control from the top but Hall keeps moving.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Buchanan with a lazy takedown attempt and Hall counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Hall. Hall prevents Buchanan from getting back to his feet. Hall would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. Hall is looking to work some ground and pound but Buchanan has wrist control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hall drops back for a leg but he's not going to get it - he lets go and Buchanan dives on top into guard. Buchanan drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hall manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Buchanan has Hall in his guard. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Hall postures up and lands some nice ground and pound. Hall has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Buchanan is proving hard to escape from. Buchanan keeping moving, preventing Hall from controlling successfully. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hall trying to stand up but can't free himself from Buchanan's guard. Hall controlling from the top position. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
Lefty Hall has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet. Buchanan leaves Hall with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Hall shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Buchanan as he jumps to the side.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Buchanan shoots and misses and Hall counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Hall. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Virgil Buchanan. That's going to take a lot out of him. Hall looks winded! Hall wants to stand and escape but instead Buchanan has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard. Hall keeping moving, preventing Buchanan from controlling successfully. Hall keeping full guard, as Buchanan tries to pass. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Buchanan works a leg free and moves into half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Lefty Hall dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Hall misses with an uppercut
and Buchanan makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Buchanan shoots and misses and Hall counters with a shoot takedown into half guard. Buchanan is defending against the submission attempts here by Hall.
Hall is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Buchanan defends it well. Hall seems to be looking for submissions.
Hall should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete. Hall passes the guard and advances to mount!
That's one minute gone in the round. Buchanan is in all sorts of trouble here.
Buchanan is squirming around, avoiding Hall's attempts to control the action. Hall moves into side control, trying to work for a kimura. That looks painful! Will he finish!!?? No, Buchanan has worked his arm free - good work by Buchanan!
Hall works to advance to full mount. Buchanan defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Hall is breathing heavily.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Buchanan gets back to half guard. Hall trying to mount his opponent but Buchanan defends it. Hall trying to control from Buchanan's half guard. Buchanan has other ideas though and has regained full guard. Hall wants to pass the guard but Buchanan is keeping the position. Hall is still trying to improve position. Hall wants to control from the top but Buchanan keeps moving.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Buchanan keeping full guard, as Hall tries to pass. Hall is looking to advance position but Buchanan has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount! Buchanan content just to control the position here. Lefty Hall has got the better of the ground game so far. Hall tries to reverse the position but Buchanan maintains control.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Buchanan is standing up out of mount! Strange tactic there - he must really want this one on the feet! A telegraphed takedown attempt from Hall is defended easily by Buchanan. Buchanan shoots in but no luck this time. Buchanan closes this distance looking for a takedown but Hall circles away. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Virgil Buchanan. That's going to take a lot out of him. The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Hall looks to score with a jab to the body but Buchanan is just out of range. Buchanan shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Hall but Hall pushes him off and we're back to square one. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Lefty Hall showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!
Hall misses with a takedown and Buchanan counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head. Excellent takedown into side control there by Hall. Hall is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Buchanan will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already. Hall looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Buchanan stops Hall from passing to mount.
That's one minute gone in the round. Buchanan wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! Hall is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Buchanan is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now. Hall takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Hall goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Buchanan rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Hall's guard! Nice work there by Buchanan! Hall wants to get back to his feet but Buchanan is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hall looking for a guillotine here but Buchanan defends easily.
Hall can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Buchanan controls the pace. Buchanan wants to control from the top but Hall keeps moving. Hall wants to stand up but Buchanan is controlling him.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Buchanan slips effortlessly into side control - very nice. Hall is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Buchanan scores with a couple of short elbows. Hall wants to control but Buchanan postures up. Hall tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Buchanan presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Buchanan working for a submission but Hall is keeping him at bay. Buchanan tries to control but Hall wriggling away. Buchanan lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Buchanan connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Hall tries to reverse the position but Buchanan maintains control.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Virgil Buchanan. I think Hall has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
