Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jake Barbossa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and You Down (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barbossa's entrance music is Intergalactic by The Beastie Boys. A fine choice. Down has chosen st. anger as his entrance music. This should be a great matchup!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jake Barbossa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, You Down!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Paul Gruel and Chris Saunders.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight.
Down staying out of range there.
Barbossa misses with a left hand
and Down counters with a good low kick that Barbossa was not able to check.
We've been hearing reports that Barbossa has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Barbossa closes the distance and clinches up with Down, looking for a takedown. Barbossa pushes Down against the cage but Down circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.
Barbossa scores with a nice right hand.
Barbossa changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Down tries to avoid it but Barbossa manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Down to the ground. Down escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Both fighters are looking to counter, which isn't making for the most exciting fight in the world.

Barbossa shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Down manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
Down told us pre-fight that he has been working on his escapes in training. Let's see if he can call on some of his new skills to get back to his feet.
Barbossa won't allow Down to sweep him here.

Down is looking for a triangle but Barbossa pushes his legs off easily.
Down wants to stand and escape but Barbossa is having none of it.

Down is trying to keep Barbossa in close.

Barbossa got a little sloppy there for a moment and Down has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Barbossa has managed to get both his arms back between Down's legs - danger averted.

Down has his foot on Barbossa's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Barbossa works his way back into a safe position though.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Down working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Barbossa doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Barbossa manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

and Down counters with an inside leg kick.
Down displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Barbossa.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jake Barbossa. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Barbossa feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Down is looking to stand up but Barbossa isn't so interested in that idea.
Down wants to sweep but no luck.

Barbossa loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.

Down working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Barbossa doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Barbossa manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Barbossa might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Down looking to hit a scissor sweep but Barbossa is one step ahead there.
Down really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Barbossa. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.

Jake Barbossa has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Barbossa works Down's body with a nice hook.
Barbossa is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Down.
Barbossa misses the jab.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Barbossa tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Down swivels and escapes.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!


Barbossa ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Down moves away.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Barbossa shoots in and drives through. Down sprawls well.

and Down makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Barbossa really felt that one!

Down leaves Barbossa with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Barbossa throws a jab but it's blocked by Down.
Barbossa is really struggling to find his range with his punches. Down's reach advantage is clearly causing him problems.
Barbossa throws an overhand right that lands on Down's shoulder, as Down tries to avoid the shot.

and Down cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.

Barbossa tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Down was well out of range. Poor timing from Barbossa.
Barbossa gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily
and Down counters with a head kick.
Barbossa tries to score a power double leg takedown but Down sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Barbossa somewhat.

Barbossa goes for a double leg but Down avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Down continues to drive forward.
Down is trying to break free.
Down has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Barbossa goes for a takedown in the clinch but Down prevents it.

Down pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
You Down is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.
Barbossa rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Down counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.

Barbossa shoots in and drives through. Down sprawls well.
Barbossa looks to throw the jab but Down is out of range.
Barbossa throws a right hand that misses
and Down counters with a two punch combo.
Barbossa dives in for a single leg takedown but Down sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
Barbossa wants a takedown but no success here.
Down is defending well against a takedown attempt.
Down wants to strike at distance but he can't break free of the clinch.

Down ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Down no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

You Down showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

Barbossa drives through with a takedown into Down's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Barbossa won't allow Down to get back to his feet.
Down has momentary wrist control but Barbossa slips an elbow through the middle.

Down is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Barbossa defends well.
