Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Austin Smith! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 7 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Aku Kuat! The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Dirk Anderson and Peter Branson.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Kuat gets tackled into the cage by Smith. Smith maintains the clinch. Kuat manages to pull guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Kuat is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Smith definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Smith is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there. Kuat working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Smith doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Smith manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Kuat is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Kuat wants to sweep here but Smith controlling him for the moment. Smith drops back looking for a leg! Kuat is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Kuat manages to kick Smith off! Smith jumps back into Kuat's guard. Kuat keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully. Smith tries to free his leg and advance position but Kuat is retaining full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Kuat keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully. Smith will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Smith is pushing down on Kuat's leg trying to pass to half guard. Kuat is fighting to maintain full guard but Smith has managed to sneak the leg through. Smith is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Smith is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Kuat is just riding it out for now. Smith eventually gives up the hold. Smith looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Kuat preventing any damage for now, controlling his opponent's head.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith wants to lay and pray for a moment but Kuat keeps working. Kuat looking for submissions off his back. Kuat really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Smith. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Smith has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Kuat defend it? Smith steps over the head and cranks it - Kuat is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Smith!
