The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Phowa shoots in looking for a takedown. Lawrence tries to sprawl out of it but Phowa keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Lawrence manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Phowa throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Phowa lands a head kick!

It looks like Carmelo Lawrence has been cut.
Phowa connects with a right hand. Lawrence shakes it off.
Phowa tries to clinch up.
Phowa gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Lawrence counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Lawrence.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Lawrence chips away with some ground and pound.

Lawrence is looking to work some ground and pound but Phowa has wrist control.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Lawrence working his ground and pound in the gym.
Lawrence has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.
Lawrence tries to free his leg and advance position but Phowa is retaining full guard.
Lawrence is persisting with the attempt to improve his position.
Lawrence lands a couple of digs.
Lawrence makes a bit of distance and scores with some ground and pound, still in guard.

Phowa is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Lawrence is in close to Phowa's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Phowa is trying to control Lawrence's posture but Lawrence avoids it.
