PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Sanford Mays (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Daniel Leone (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Daniel Leone will no doubt be trying to keep this one on the feet, where he has a distinct advantage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 3 - 1, fighting out of London, Sanford Mays!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Daniel Leone!
The judges for this bout are James Ackerman, Sam Margolis and Richard Clark.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Leone dips to his left and cracks Mays with an uppercut!


It looks like Sanford Mays has been cut.

Mays gets caught flat footed, as Leone shoots in with a quick takedown into guard.
Leone is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
Mays looking for a sweep. Not yet Mays, not yet.
Mays has Leone pulled in close to control his posture.
Leone slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up, due to lack of activity on the part of Sanford Mays.
Mays tries to clinch but Leone moves out of range.

Mays changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Leone tries to avoid it but Mays manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Leone to the ground. Leone escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Leone drives through with a takedown into guard.
Leone wants to get up but he can't break Mays's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Leone decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Mays, up you get!

Leone fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Mays sprawls well initially but Leone persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Mays avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Leone.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Leone clinches with his opponent.
Leone has had enough of the clinch and is looking to separate.
Leone stalls.

Leone wants the takedown. Mays is fighting it off but Leone persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mays's guard against the cage.

Leone tries to stand but Mays is controlling from the bottom.
Mays looking to control.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mays is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Mays tries to pull guard but Leone holds him up against the cage and eventually Mays drops back down to his feet.

Leone has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Mays clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!

Leone wants to control from the top but Mays keeps moving.
Leone might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Mays haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.
Leone wants to stand but Mays is controlling his posture from full guard.

Mays could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.

Sanford Mays has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.

Leone has managed to clinch.
Leone wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Mays misses with a body punch.

Mays's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Leone shoots in and gets a takedown into Mays's guard.

Mays is pulling down on Leone's head. It's preventing any offense from Leone, at least for the moment.
Leone is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.

Leone closes the distance and clinches.

Leone wants the takedown. Mays is fighting it off but Leone persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Mays's guard against the cage.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Mays keeping moving, preventing Leone from controlling successfully.
Leone looking to sit in guard and control but Mays gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

Mays lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.
Mays in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.
Leone wants to stand but Mays is controlling the position.

Mays is standing up over Leone. Leone looks to escape but Mays dives into side control.
Daniel Leone has got the better of the ground game so far.
Leone is breathing heavily.
Leone tries to get back to half guard but can't.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Mays postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Daniel Leone showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!

Leone has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Mays is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.

Mays escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Sanford Mays is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Leone misses with a series of wild punches.
Leone takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Leone shoots in for a takedown and gets it.

Mays manages to create a bit of space in order to work his way back to his feet. Leone keeps hold of his opponent and drives him back against the cage.

Leone throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Mays counters with a head kick. That will keep Leone thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Mays tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Leone swivels and escapes.

Leone drives through and clinches with Mays against the cage.

Leone gets the body lock takedown. After a quick scramble, Mays regains guard.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Leone lands with a shot to the body.

Mays manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Leone on his heels. He'll look to pass Leone's guard now, I'm sure.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Daniel Leone hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Mays is pulling down on Leone's head. It's preventing any offense from Leone, at least for the moment.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Sanford Mays.
Well Leone has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
