Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
15 - 10 - 0, fighting out of London, Mark Deeney! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Ricardo Mendes! The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, James Glass and James Ackerman.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mendes swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Deeney counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw. Mendes tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Deeney defends well and Mendes ends up having to push Deeney into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Mendes is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Deeney can't fight it off and eventually Mendes manages to take the fight to the floor. Deeney looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard. Deeney working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Mendes. Deeney has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Mendes is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position. Good anti-grappling being displayed by Deeney as Mendes tries to tie him up. Mendes breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Mendes tries for a takedown but Deeney sees it coming a mile off and avoids it easily. Deeney stuffs the takedown attempt from Mendes. Mendes gets slowly back to his feet. Mark Deeney has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ricardo Mendes. Mendes tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Deeney swivels and escapes. Mendes shoots for a takedown but Deeney saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily.

Deeney scores with a hook. Deeney misses with a hook. Mendes ducked under it nicely. Mendes closes the distance and clinches up with Deeney, looking for a takedown. Mendes pushes Deeney against the cage but Deeney circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Mendes takes a punch right to his stomach. That took the wind out of him momentarily. Mendes tries to clinch but Deeney is having none of it. Deeney scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Mendes doesn't seem bothered though. Mendes misses with a two punch combination.
Mendes tries to close the distance and clinch but Deeney swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Deeney throws a lazy uppercut
and Mendes counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. Deeney misses with a head kick.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendes shoots in for a takedown but Deeney shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. Mendes has his takedown stuffed enabling Deeney to counter with a crisp jab. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Deeney. Mendes fails with the takedown enabling Deeney to counter with a crisp jab. Mendes feints and as Deeney raises his hands in defense, Mendes changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard. Mendes pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Deeney is keeping the position for now. Deeney wants to sweep here but Mendes controlling him for the moment. Deeney is looking to stand up but Mendes isn't so interested in that idea. Deeney keeping full guard, as Mendes tries to pass.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendes stops Deeney from standing up. Mendes stopping the sweep attempt from Deeney. Mendes is stalling in the full guard. Deeney wants to improve his position but instead Mendes has moved into half guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Deeney keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Deeney is looking to escape. Mendes trying to control from half guard but Deeney is working away. Deeney wants to get back to full guard. Mendes is looking for a kimura but Deeney is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Mendes to get the leverage. Mendes is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Deeney doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Mendes. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Deeney is trying to stand back up but Mendes is controlling him

A close round but Ricardo Mendes will probably get the nod. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin!
Deeney displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Mendes. Mendes moves into range and clinches up with Deeney. Deeney softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage. Deeney using the Thai clinch to land knees to the body.

Mendes gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground. Deeney is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Mendes is controlling him. Mendes is looking to stand up but Deeney won't let him. Mendes looking to pass the guard. Deeney wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup. Mendes content to stall in guard here.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Mark Deeney just wasn't active enough. A clash of legs there as Mendes blocks the low kick. A telegraphed takedown attempt from Mendes is defended easily by Deeney. Deeney closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Mendes blocks a couple of punches on the inside.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Mendes tries to break free but Deeney pushes him back against the cage. Deeney throws a head punch that misses. Mendes blocks an elbow strike. Mendes blocks a knee to the body. He'll have a nicely bruised forearm in the morning. Deeney lands with a left to the head. Deeney with the Thai clinch. He's looking to land a big knee but he's not managed it this time.

It looks like Ricardo Mendes has been cut. Mendes on the defensive, avoiding the knees to the body.
Mendes tries to score a body lock takedown but Deeney shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Mark Deeney has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ricardo Mendes. Deeney avoids the elbow strike from Mendes, against the cage.
Mendes tries to break the clinch but Deeney is controlling the position. Mendes is working for takedown but Deeney is calmly controlling the position for now. Mendes gets a trip takedown into half guard.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Deeney is staying active underneath Mendes, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Deeney keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. My spies in The Seven Sins Grappling Academy inform me that Mendes has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! It looks like Mendes is going to stand back up.

Ricardo Mendes showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The cut man is working on Ricardo Mendes's cut. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. Ladies and gentlemen, this is the final round!

Deeney throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Deeney throws a right high kick that is partially blocked by Mendes. Mendes tries to clinch up but Deeney circles away and keeps his distance. Deeney throws a nice inside leg kick. Mendes dives in for a single leg takedown but Deeney sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Deeney tries to throw a body punch but Mendes avoids it by throwing Deeney back against the cage. Mendes jumps guard and drags Deeney to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back. Mendes controls Deeney momentarily but Deeney frees himself.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mendes is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Deeney trying to control but Mendes is working from the bottom. Mendes controlling Deeney's posture. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
The ref stands the fighters back up, due to lack of action by Ricardo Mendes. Deeney walks into a stiff left hand from Mendes. Mark Deeney is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Deeney misses with a looping left. Deeney lands with a two punch combination before moving back out of range.
Deeney looks to land a body kick but Mendes moved away. Mark Deeney has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!

Mendes tries to close the distance and clinch but Deeney swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Mendes. Mendes with a body punch. A glancing blow. Deeney pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Mendes tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. This has been an exciting period of action! Mendes manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Deeney on his heels. He'll look to pass Deeney's guard now, I'm sure. Mendes trying to control but Deeney is working from the bottom.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Mendes loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry. Deeney looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Ricardo Mendes has got the better of the ground game so far. Deeney wants to stand and escape but Mendes is having none of it. Ricardo Mendes is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. Mendes has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Deeney is proving hard to escape from. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Mendes's corner is telling him to maintain position.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Deeney escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Mendes gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Mendes trying to control but Deeney is working from the bottom.
The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Ricardo Mendes wasn't active enough on the ground. Mendes wants to clinch and Deeney counters with a kick to the head that grazes his opponent. Mendes is lucky that one didn't land flush. Mendes is looking to score with low kicks. Mendes shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Deeney sprawls well. Deeney wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Mendes gets slowly back to his feet. Mark Deeney has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ricardo Mendes. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Deeney lands with a slapping head kick. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Deeney swings away with a body shot that misses
and Mendes counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Deeney!
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Mark Deeney. I think Mendes has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
