Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the featherweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 7 - 0, fighting out of London, Jose Mera! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Mickey O Doherty! The judges for this bout are Patrick Alders, Albert Achterberg and Paulsen Ambrosius.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mera fails to land the takedown. Mera throws out a token jab with nothing on it. O Doherty lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
O Doherty lands a jab to the head.
Mera on the wrong end of a nice jab. Mera shoots in but no luck this time. Mera with poor footwork there. He got himself in a bit of a tangle, enabling O Doherty to score with a decent uppercut. O Doherty has been working on his striking defense in training and it's paying off as Mera is landing a low percentage of strikes. O Doherty defends well against a solid takedown attempt from Mera. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Jose Mera. That's going to take a lot out of him. O Doherty throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Mera drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. O Doherty is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Mera asserts his dominance and retains side control. Mera tries to advance to mount but can't. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! O Doherty is pushing Mera's head away, looking to escape. Mera manages to hold on to the position though. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. O Doherty gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there!
That's one minute gone in the round. O Doherty tries to control Mera's body but Mera pushes him off. O Doherty squirms to his side and now Mera has his back! O Doherty rolls, trying to escape but Mera keeps control of the position.
Both fighters really going for it on the ground here! Mera has the rear naked choke here! This is very bad for O Doherty! Can he survive? No! He's out! Mera gets to his feet and celebrates with his cornermen. He looks absolutely delighted. In the post fight interviews he takes time to thank his parents and everyone who has believed in him from the start. How sweet.
