PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jeff Gorden (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Van Kelly (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I don't know about you partner, but I'm pumped for this one!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 8 - 2, fighting out of Hilo, Jeff Gorden!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Van Kelly!
The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Micheangelo Fripello and Ryoma Takatsuka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

The fight moves into the clinch position.

Kelly manages to break the clinch.
Kelly shoots in for a takedown but Gorden shows good takedown defense.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Kelly.

Kelly moves into the clinch.
Kelly tries for a takedown. No joy.
Jeff Gorden has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Van Kelly.
Gorden swings away with an uppercut that misses.

Kelly jumps into guard, dragging Gorden to the mat.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

Kelly tries to land a sweep but no joy.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Kelly has his hands up protecting his head but a hook from Gorden finds it's way round the side to connect with Kelly's head.

and Kelly counters with a shoot takedown. Gorden fights it but they end up in guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Kelly tries to stand but Gorden is controlling from the bottom.
Kelly forces his way into half guard.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Kelly seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Gorden does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Gorden tries to roll over but Kelly keeps him under control.

Gorden is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at GoldStar Elite, so we'll see if he gets out of it.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Van Kelly wasn't active enough on the ground.
Gorden misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Kelly.
Gorden tries to improve position but can't.

Kelly swings around for an armbar but Gorden sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into Kelly's guard.

Gorden pushes down on Kelly's leg and manages to get into half guard.
Kelly is doing well to avoid being mounted. He's controlling the position at the moment.
Gorden is thwarting Kelly's attempts to control the position.

Kelly tries to get to full guard but Gorden has control of the leg.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Gorden is working for a kimura but Kelly is defending it quite comfortably.
Kelly tries to kick Gorden off in order to stand up. Gorden Avoids the leg push though and dives into side control.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Kelly is trying to control Gorden's posture but Gorden avoids it.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Van Kelly dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Nice sprawl there from Kelly as Gorden shoots in.

Kelly is keen to just control but Gorden is a slippery customer.
Gorden is trying is best to control the position here.
Kelly is looking to stall here but Gorden recovers full guard.
Gorden manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Kelly manages to get himself to full guard.
Gorden postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Gorden shoots in and drives through. Kelly sprawls well.

Kelly moves out of range of the strikes.
Gorden leaves Kelly with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Gorden will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Kelly clinches up with Gorden and pushes him back against the cage.

Kelly breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Kelly stuffs the takedown attempt from Gorden. Gorden gets slowly back to his feet.

Gorden lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Kelly circles away quickly and effectively.

Gorden instigates a clinch.
Kelly tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Gorden just stands there and leans against the cage.
Kelly wants to break free but Gorden has control.

Gorden jumps guard and drags Kelly to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.
Van Kelly has got the better of the ground game so far.
Kelly loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Gorden wants to sweep but no luck.
Gorden trying to keep a closed guard but Kelly is proving a slippery customer.
Kelly is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.
Gorden attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.

Gorden darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Gorden is stalling here. Kelly is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Gorden seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Kelly has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Kelly is looking to take a break and control but Gorden is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.

That was a close second round but I would say that Jeff Gorden will probably get the nod.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!


Gorden looks to score with a jab to the body but Kelly is just out of range.

Gorden is trying to slow down the pace of the fight but Kelly is keeping busy.
Kelly creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses.
Kelly fails to pull guard.

Kelly escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
Gorden closes this distance looking for a takedown but Kelly circles away.
Gorden goes for a double leg but Kelly avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Kelly continues to drive forward.

Gorden has Kelly pressed up against the cage and is working for takedown. Kelly manages to improve position though and keeps the fight standing.

Kelly is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Gorden can't fight it off and eventually Kelly manages to take the fight to the floor. Gorden looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Gorden misses with a jab, cross combination.
Jeff Gorden seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Kelly fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Gorden avoids it really well and circles away.

Kelly gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Kelly looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Kelly is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Gorden is controlling him.
Kelly wants to improve his position but instead Gorden has moved into half guard.
Gorden is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Kelly!

Gorden tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Kelly is working to get back to half guard.
Gorden wants to control the pace but Kelly is squirming around nicely.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Gorden is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Kelly is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him.

And that's the end of the fight!
I would just about give that final round to Van Kelly.
I think Kelly has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
