Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jamaal Schmidt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Paul Travos!
The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Anthony Taglia and Alyssa Summers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Schmidt tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Travos paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Travos tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Travos clinches.

Schmidt pulls Travos into guard.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Schmidt seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
Travos trying to control the position from guard on top but Schmidt is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Schmidt looking for a sweep. Not yet Schmidt, not yet.
Travos tries to free his leg and advance position but Schmidt is retaining full guard.
Travos is looking to pass into half guard but Schmidt pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Schmidt is in guard.
Travos should think about turning a few of those tyres round his middle into muscle if he wants people to take him seriously as an athlete.

This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Travos drops Schmidt with a left right combo! Travos follows him down to the ground into side control.


It looks like Jamaal Schmidt has been cut.
Schmidt tries to escape but Travos is in control.

Travos trying to control the action but Schmidt is working from the bottom.
Travos might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Schmidt haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Travos working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
Schmidt is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Travos off and has taken his back!

Schmidt is working for the rear naked choke. He has one arm under the chin but Travos has hold of the other arm. A bit of a stalemate here.

Schmidt is looking for a choke. Travos gets to his feet with his opponent on his back and slams him to the mat. Travos manages to squirm out of the attempted choke and turns into his opponent's guard.

Travos prevents Schmidt from getting back to his feet.
Travos throws a strike but Schmidt rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Travos wants to stand but Schmidt is controlling the position.

Travos controls Schmidt momentarily but Schmidt frees himself.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Travos is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Schmidt dives into side control.
Travos is trying to control Schmidt's posture but Schmidt avoids it.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
Schmidt creates a bit of distance and throws down some hard shots.

Schmidt working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
The ground and pound from Schmidt seems to be hitting the mat more than his opponent.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Travos throws a hook but Schmidt blocks it.
Travos throws a shot to the body.
Travos throws a series of punches but Schmidt avoids them all with ease.
Schmidt ducks under a wild hook from Travos.
Schmidt avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Travos loads up on a big right hand but Schmidt slips the punch.
Schmidt shoots in looking for a takedown. Travos tries to sprawl out of it but Schmidt keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Travos manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.

Travos pulls Schmidt into guard.
Schmidt is sitting in guard, working some ground and pound.
Schmidt wants to stand and escape but instead Travos has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Jamaal Schmidt overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
Travos throws a right and a left that Schmidt avoids nicely.
Paul Travos seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Schmidt closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Travos to the mat! Travos manages to get full guard.
Travos wants to get back to his feet but he's too absorbed in his own little project and Schmidt manages to pass to side control.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Schmidt thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Travos's head.
Schmidt tries to stand and escape but Travos is controlling the position.
Schmidt scores with a couple of good hammerfists.

Schmidt is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Travos defends it well.

Travos has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Schmidt is working away from the top position though.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

Travos has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Schmidt is trying to keep an underhook but Travos manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Schmidt tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Schmidt wants to get back to his feet but Travos is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

Travos not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Travos throws a big right hand that misses.
Schmidt is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Travos must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Schmidt is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Schmidt manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Travos manages to get himself to full guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Schmidt wants to stand but Travos is controlling his posture from full guard.

Jamaal Schmidt has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet.
Schmidt dodges the punch combination from Travos.
Travos misses with a wild combination.
Travos misses with a double jab
and Schmidt connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.
Travos throws a head kick but Schmidt moves out of range.
Travos takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Travos fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Schmidt, pushing him back against the cage.
Schmidt just leaning against Travos, taking a breather.
Travos gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Schmidt.
Come on Schmidt - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Schmidt turns his hips and lands a very nice judo throw into side control!
Travos wants to control but Schmidt postures up.
Travos wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done!
Schmidt throws an elbow but Travos slips to the side and avoids it well.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Travos is pushing Schmidt's head away, looking to escape. Schmidt manages to hold on to the position though.

Schmidt stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Schmidt tries to clinch up.
Travos is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
A big right from Travos misses.
Schmidt tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Travos manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Travos lands with a nice body punch.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jamaal Schmidt.
I think Schmidt has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
