PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jay Penn (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Trevor Philips (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 6 - 8 - 2, fighting out of Hilo, Jay Penn!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 4 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Trevor Philips!
The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Paul Gruel and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Penn walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Penn doesn't react quick enough there as he takes a shot to the body.

Penn shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Penn trying to control from Philips's half guard. Philips has other ideas though and has regained full guard.
Penn won't allow Philips to sweep him here.
Philips keeping full guard, as Penn tries to pass.
Philips keeping moving, preventing Penn from controlling successfully.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Penn stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Philips swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Our spies down at at Hilo Training Center inform us that Philips has really been working on his submissions in the buildup to this fight. Will it pay off?
Philips pulls Penn in close to prevent any damage.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Philips is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penn loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Penn stands and throws Philips's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Penn wants to control but Philips is keeping him busy.
We've been hearing good reports from Penn's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Penn is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down Philips's shoulder. That is not cool.

Penn is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Philips knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Penn happy to just control the position for now.
Philips is looking to reverse the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Philips is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Penn's leg. He's managed it. Nice work.
Philips is not content to let Penn control the position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Penn throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

Penn is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Penn controlling the pace.
Philips tries to get to full guard but Penn has control of the leg.

Penn is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Philips has managed to free his arm - good work.
Philips is looking to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Philips gets back to full guard.
Penn trying to control the position from guard on top but Philips is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Penn working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Penn thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Penn looking to pass the guard.
Penn stopping the sweep attempt from Philips.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jay Penn dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!


Philips with a nice cross.


It looks like Jay Penn has been cut.
Philips lunges at Penn with a hook that half lands and is half blocked by Penn's hand.
Penn takes one to the side of the head.
Philips moves into range and connects with a jab.
Philips slaps away a takedown attempt from Penn, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Philips bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Penn's head.


Penn is rocked!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Penn will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
Oh Penn is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Philips lands an uppercut, right on the button! Penn tumbles backwards into the cage, staring vacantly into space! He's got no idea where he is, who he is or what day it is... Poor guy.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:45 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Trevor Philips!
