PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Nichi Hong (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Hidalgo Montoya (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hong comes to the cage accompanied by Hong Entrance Song. Montoya is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by El Toro. Both these guys have really solid chins. Will we see a standup war or will they both decide that a knockout is unlikely and try to win the fight elsewhere?

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 14 - 5 - 2, fighting out of Los Angeles, Nichi Hong!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 31 - 16 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hidalgo Montoya!
The judges for this bout are Donald Grub, Steven Brown and James Atkins.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hong throws a looping overhand right but Montoya ducks down to avoid it.
Montoya misses with a wild body shot.
Montoya throws out a token jab with nothing on it.
Hong dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Montoya. That did some damage!
Hong lands a leg kick. The shin dug right into the meat of the thigh.
Hong moves into range and lands a nice body kick.
Hidalgo Montoya seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Hong misses with a low kick.
Montoya jabs Hong right on the nose. Hong blinks but takes it well.
Hong keeping at a good range here, avoiding a leg kick.
Montoya throws a solid leg kick but Hong takes the impact on his shin and smiles at Montoya.
Hong steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Montoya.
Montoya on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot.
Hong moves into range and lands a nice leg kick.
Montoya shoots in for a double leg but Hong sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Montoya takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
A nice inside leg kick there by Montoya. That's going to slow Hong down.
Montoya walks into a straight right hand from Hong.
Hong on the wrong end of a nice jab.
Hong takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.

Montoya throws the left hand but Hong avoids the punch easily.
Hong fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
A looping hook to the body misses from Hong. Montoya does a little dance to reset his feet.
Montoya ducks down and throws a hook to the body.
Montoya stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Hong.
Hong looks to land a right hand but Montoya moved out of range.
Hong is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Montoya.
Montoya dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Hong gets caught napping as Montoya dives in and scores a takedown. Hong manages to retain guard.
Hong lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Montoya!
Hong is trying to take his opponent's back.
Hong takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Hong wants to control the pace but Montoya is squirming around nicely.
Hong controlling from mount.
Montoya is desperately trying to improve his position but Hong has a good base and remains in mount.
Hong can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Montoya is looking to escape.

Hong with some aggressive grappling here, looking for the finish.
Hong looking to control but Montoya is working nicely, looking to advance position himself.
Montoya really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

Montoya gets back to half guard.

Hong slows the pace down in half guard.

We're going to have a standup here because Nichi Hong wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Montoya lands a nice leg kick that just misses Hong's sensitive parts.

Montoya closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Hong to the mat! Hong manages to get full guard.
Montoya wants to control from the top but Hong keeps moving.
Montoya stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Hong swivels though and keeps the full guard.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Montoya is still trying to improve position.
Montoya trying to control but Hong is working from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close round but I would say that Nichi Hong will probably get the nod.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.

It looks like Hidalgo Montoya has been cut.
Montoya connects with a solid leg kick.
Montoya lands a nice looking kick to the body. Hong takes a step back to recover.
Hong avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Montoya looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Montoya avoids the body shot from Hong.
Hong moves forwards but Montoya connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Montoya throws a nice looking combination but Hong bobs and weaves to avoid any damage.
Montoya thows a leg kick but Hong checks it
and Hong counters with a straight right hand.
Hong lands with a nice body punch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Hong throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Nichi Hong is winning the standup battle so far.
Hong avoids a lazy jab quite easily.
Hong clobbers Montoya with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise.

Hong takes a shot to the nose. Hopefully that hasn't broken it.
Hong jabs away that one connects to the head of his opponent.
Hong waving his hands out in front of him, looking to distract Montoya.
Hong misses with a low kick.
Montoya moves out of range as Hong throws a body kick.
Nichi Hong is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Hong scores with the left hand. Montoya knows he should have avoided that one.
Hong walks into a jab.
Montoya misses the shot to the body.
Montoya thuds a left hand into Hong's body.
Hong misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Montoya.
Hong looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.
Hong lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.

The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Some wild striking there from Montoya.
Montoya scores with a leg kick.
Montoya ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.

Hong chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Montoya can pounce on him.
Nice uppercut lands for Hong. That snapped Montoya's head back.
Montoya tries to score with a low kick but Hong moves his leg out of the way.

and Hong counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.
Hong throws a body punch but Montoya moves out of range.
Hong looks to score with a jab to the body but Montoya is just out of range.

Montoya takes a shot right to the bread basket.
Montoya tests Hong's chin there with a solid looking shot.

Hong lands a jab to Montoya's midsection.
Hong swings away with a body shot that misses

and Montoya counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Hong's guard now.
Hong has control of Montoya's left arm, preventing Montoya from doing any damage.

Hong is trying to control the position but Montoya postures up.
Montoya passes Hong's left leg - he's now in half guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Montoya is looking for a kimura here.

Hong is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Montoya's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Montoya's back!
I really don't envy Montoya right now.
Montoya manages to reverse the position and now he's in Hong's guard. Nice work there by Montoya.
Hong seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action!

Montoya fakes with the hands and throws a leg kick but Hong is out of range.
Hong pivots, looking for a leg kick but Montoya is out of range and Hong settles back down.
Hong feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Montoya's calf.

Hong throws a front kick aimed at Montoya's knee but Montoya avoids it well.
Montoya connects with a single shot there.

Montoya cracks a nice hook into Hong's ribs.
Montoya takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.

Montoya lands with a thumping leg kick.
Montoya attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Hong connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe.
Montoya throws a leg kick that misses.
Hong fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Montoya manages to avoid it.
Hong showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Montoya.
A looping hook to the body misses from Hong. Montoya does a little dance to reset his feet.
The crowd cheers as Hong lands an impressive looking overhand right. Montoya doesn't seem phased though.
Montoya shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down.

This has been an exciting period of action!
Montoya trying to control the position from guard on top but Hong is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Hong pulls Montoya in close to prevent any damage.
Montoya sitting in guard, not really doing much.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
Montoya wants to control from the top but Hong keeps moving.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Hidalgo Montoya wasn't active enough on the ground.

Hong throws a head kick but Montoya moves out of range.
Hong throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Ooooh, nice body kick lands from Montoya. Hong shrugs it off though.

Montoya throws a leg kick but Hong sees it coming and checks it nicely.

Hong throws a head kick that connects with a bit of head and a bit of hand.
Hong misses with a wild body shot.
Hong looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Montoya keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Montoya shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Hong blocks a low kick nicely.

Montoya scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice.
Hong can't do much from the bottom here.
Hong tries to improve position but can't.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Hong is working hard here to advance position.

I would just about give that final round to Hidalgo Montoya.
I think Hong has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
