Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the bantamweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
15 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Bruno Da Gaucho! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Tom Hammer! The judges for this bout are Tarja Halkonen, Matti Vanhoillinen and Johanna Lukiainen.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hammer just misses with a punch to the body.
Hammer looking to land some kicks to the body here.
Hammer shoots and misses and Da Gaucho counters with a one-two to the body. Hammer closes the distance and clinches up with Da Gaucho, looking for a takedown. Hammer pushes Da Gaucho against the cage but Da Gaucho circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Da Gaucho throws a right hand that Hammer ducks under and follows up with a left that Hammer also avoids with ease. Hammer tries to clinch up but Da Gaucho circles away and keeps his distance. No luck for Hammer with that takedown attempt. Bruno Da Gaucho has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Tom Hammer. Hammer tries to clinch and Da Gaucho counters with a two punch combo. Hammer moves to clinch but Da Gaucho breaks away and Da Gaucho counters with a driving takedown into guard. Nice work there by Da Gaucho. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet. Da Gaucho is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact. Hammer has his hands on Da Gaucho's head, controlling the position. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Da Gaucho is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hammer working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Da Gaucho doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Da Gaucho manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Da Gaucho in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Da Gaucho throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Hammer works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Da Gaucho is looking to work some ground and pound but Hammer has wrist control. Da Gaucho missing there with some ground and pound from the guard. Da Gaucho trying to control the position from guard on top but Hammer is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Hammer trying to keep a closed guard but Da Gaucho is proving a slippery customer.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Da Gaucho wants to control from the top but Hammer keeps moving. Hammer looking to control.
Da Gaucho is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control. Da Gaucho has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. No luck with that takedown attempt from Da Gaucho. Hammer shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Da Gaucho closes this distance looking for a takedown but Hammer circles away. Da Gaucho shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Hammer is trying to defend but Da Gaucho finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hammer wants to get back to full guard. Da Gaucho trying to control from half guard but Hammer is working away. Hammer is trying to maintain the position but Da Gaucho is very close to passing his half guard. Hammer makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Hammer. Da Gaucho trying to control but Hammer is working from the bottom. Da Gaucho got a little sloppy there for a moment and Hammer has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Da Gaucho has managed to get both his arms back between Hammer's legs - danger averted.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Da Gaucho preventing the sweep. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Da Gaucho controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Hammer throwing his legs up looking for a triangle.
Da Gaucho is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Da Gaucho has gone for a leg lock! Hammer slips out almost immediately though and dives into Da Gaucho's guard. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Da Gaucho wants to sweep but no luck. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Bruno Da Gaucho dominated that round. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Hammer wants to clinch but Da Gaucho slips to the side and Da Gaucho counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Hammer! Da Gaucho working away diligently from side control. Landing strikes effectively there - that will score him some points on the judges scorecards.
Hammer wants to control but Da Gaucho postures up. Da Gaucho working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Da Gaucho lands some shots froms side control. Da Gaucho working the ground and pound from side control. Da Gaucho misses with an attempted head punch from side control. Da Gaucho taking a breather here. Hammer is not content to let Da Gaucho control the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hammer wants to control but Da Gaucho postures up. Da Gaucho working the head with strikes. Da Gaucho wants to control but Hammer is keeping him busy. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Da Gaucho gets to mount! Hammer was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly. Da Gaucho goes for an armbar but Hammer turns quickly into his guard - lovely anticipation from Hammer. Da Gaucho has his hands on Hammer's head, controlling the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Da Gaucho working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Hammer doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Oh but Da Gaucho is tightening it up a little... Hammer has to be careful here... He's got his foot tucked under now, this looks tight! Hammer reacted too slowly and this one could be over in a matter of seconds! YES! Hammer taps out! Nice BJJ there by Da Gaucho!
