Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
14 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Kaspars Daugavins! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Duncan Macgregor! The judges for this bout are Dillan Fox, Steve Smith and Trevor Gratis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! The crowd cheers as Daugavins lands an impressive looking overhand right. Macgregor doesn't seem phased though. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Macgregor has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Daugavins shoots in and gets a takedown into Macgregor's guard. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Daugavins thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. Daugavins avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Daugavins controls from within his opponent's guard. Macgregor throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Daugavins escapes and throws Macgregor's legs to the side, diving into side control! Macgregor tries to improve position but can't. Daugavins tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Daugavins has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Daugavins trying to control the position but Macgregor is working away. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's one minute gone in the round. Daugavins tries to advance to mount but Macgregor denies him. Macgregor tries to improve position but can't. Daugavins scoring with punches and elbows. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Daugavins is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Macgregor knows the correct defense though, so he's OK. Macgregor tries to bench press Daugavins off him but Daugavins keeps the position. Daugavins is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Macgregor has escaped the position, nice work there. Macgregor is being controlled here. Daugavins is trying to get an arm triangle but Macgregor is defending well. Daugavins is looking to take a break and control but Macgregor is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Daugavins controls the position. Macgregor is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Daugavins is working for what looks like an arm triangle here. Macgregor is trying to escape and Daugavins transitions quickly into an armbar! He's slapped it on tight and Macgregor is forced to tap! Nice work there by Daugavins! Very nice indeed!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Kaspars Daugavins! Kaspars Daugavins tried to hype himself up post fight but didn't word it too well and it ended up with him sounding like a bit of a tool.
