Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Duke Ellington (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rocky Scalante (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Scalante's choice of entrance music: Started from the bottom. Rocky Scalante told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
16 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Duke Ellington! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
24 - 13 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Rocky Scalante! The judges for this bout are Colin Fray, Micheangelo Fripello and Jeff Smith.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Some wild striking there from Scalante.
Ellington lands a nice looking body shot.
Sloppy strikes from Scalante. Those never looked like landing. Scalante tries to score with a leg kick but it misses it's target. Ellington throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Scalante stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly. Ellington throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Scalante takes a body punch but keeps moving. Ellington throws a hook to the side of Scalante's head but Scalante sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Ellington lands a two punch combo.
It looks like Rocky Scalante has been cut. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Scalante scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Ellington throws a head kick but Scalante moves out of range.
Scalante swings away but doesn't land with a series of punches.
A decent looking cross lands there for Ellington. A nice combination there by Scalante.
Thud! ouch! good body kick from Scalante - that will leave a mark!
A shot to the liver by Ellington. Beautiful body shot. Scalante dodges the punch combination from Ellington.

That's one minute gone in the round. Scalante throws a big shot that misses. A jab from Ellington misses. Ellington ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Scalante moves away. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Scalante has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Scalante throws a right and a left that Ellington avoids nicely. Scalante is looking to land body kicks. Scalante connects with a body shot that sends Ellington's belly button to the back. Ellington jabs Scalante right on the nose. Scalante blinks but takes it well. Scalante misses with a double jab.
Ellington leaves Scalante with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt. Scalante throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Scalante steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Ellington. Ellington slips a jab and a cross from Scalante.
Scalante shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Ellington as he avoids it easily. Duke Ellington is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Ellington sizes up Scalante with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. A looping hook to the body misses from Ellington. Scalante does a little dance to reset his feet. Ellington connects with a solid leg kick.
That's two minutes gone in the round. This has been an exciting period of action! Scalante misses with an attempted mid kick.
Ellington takes a swing at Scalante's ribcage but misses. A punch combination from Scalante misses. Scalante lands a jab-cross combination. Ellington thows a body shot but no joy. Ellington tries to move into range but Scalante moves to the side and lands with a nice right hand. Ellington is looking to wear down Scalante with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment. Scalante throws a right and a left that both miss. Duke Ellington seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Nice shot by Ellington. Scalante fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Ellington. Ellington misses with a hook. Ellington misses with a body shot.
Scalante fails with a takedown attempt. Duke Ellington has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rocky Scalante. Ellington lands with a hook. Scalante tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Scalante lets the fists fly and connects with a left straight followed by a right hook. Jab, jab by Ellington - just one landing.
Scalante is rocked! Ellington lands an uppercut out of nowhere! Scalante falls backwards - clearly groggy! Ellington dives in and finishes the fight with more strikes for a TKO finish!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Duke Ellington! In defeat, Rocky Scalante stepped up to the mic, saying '“What does it mean to be the best? It means you have to be better than the number two guy. But what gratification is there in that? He's a loser—that’s why he's number two.” '.
