The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Zaal tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Zaal misses with a right hand
and Fontaine counters with a series of strikes. Zaal will be more careful next time no doubt.
Zaal is looking to clinch but Fontaine is avoiding it.
Zaal throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Fontaine has been spending a lot of time sparring his boxing in the run up to the fight, trying to sharpen up those hands and look for a knockout.
Fontaine avoids a punch combination nicely.
Zaal misses with a left hand
and Fontaine counters with an inside leg kick.

Zaal doesn't manage to clinch there - Fontaine circles away.
Fontaine takes a body punch that cleary hurt but he's trying not to show any weakness.
Zaal rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Fontaine moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Zaal misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Fontaine.

and Fontaine counters with a straight right hand.

Zaal looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

and Fontaine counters with a series of strikes that practically lifts Zaal off his feet! He tumbles backwards, his head bouncing off the mat - Fontaine follows up with more strikes before the ref can step in but Zaal was out before he hit the floor.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:21 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Ricky Fontaine!
A relieved looking Ricky Fontaine thanked the fans for their support and gave the usual line about them being amazing. They seemed to believe that he actually meant it.
