Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Steve VanDerbeek! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ryan McReady! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Winston Howard and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! VanDerbeek instigates a clinch. McReady displaying some good clinch control by pressing VanDerbeek up against the cage. McReady's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. McReady takes a body punch but keeps moving. VanDerbeek shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with McReady but McReady pushes him off and we're back to square one. VanDerbeek closes the distance and clinches. McReady pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat. VanDerbeek throws a leg kick and McReady counters by moving into the clinch. McReady breaks the clinch.
A left lands for VanDerbeek. VanDerbeek throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
VanDerbeek scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Good work by McReady as he checks the leg kick. McReady's coach down at Cozad MMA Sydney was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on McReady's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. VanDerbeek lands a jab. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! VanDerbeek moves into the clinch successfully.
That's one minute gone in the round. VanDerbeek creates a bit of distance and throws an elbow that only just misses. VanDerbeek has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. McReady is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet. McReady breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. VanDerbeek lands a jab to the head.
VanDerbeek misses with a takedown attempt - McReady sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. VanDerbeek looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve VanDerbeek. That's going to take a lot out of him. VanDerbeek smiles there as he lands a nice right hand right on the button. VanDerbeek connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. VanDerbeek cracks McReady with a hook to the jaw. Both fighters smile at eachother and high-five before getting back down to business. VanDerbeek is looking to chop away at McReady's legs. VanDerbeek misses with a series of wild punches.

VanDerbeek thows a left - swing and a miss! McReady gets tackled into the cage by VanDerbeek. VanDerbeek maintains the clinch. McReady gets underhooks to prevent VanDerbeek's takedown attempt.
McReady's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. VanDerbeek clinches with his opponent.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! McReady lands a nice elbow.
It looks like Steve VanDerbeek has been cut. VanDerbeek looks to throw an elbow but misses. McReady avoiding damage as VanDerbeek throws knees to the body.
VanDerbeek drags the fight down to the ground.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. VanDerbeek is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. McReady really doesn't want to stay on the ground with VanDerbeek. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. VanDerbeek had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. McReady defends it easily. VanDerbeek is breathing heavily.
That's three minutes gone in the round. McReady preventing the sweep. McReady decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow. VanDerbeek rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but McReady moves out of range and avoids them all easily. VanDerbeek misses with a hook
and VanDerbeek takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as McReady checks a leg kick. Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by McReady.
This has been an exciting period of action! VanDerbeek shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with McReady but McReady pushes him off and we're back to square one. McReady tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
That's four minutes gone in the round. VanDerbeek moves into the clinch. VanDerbeek misses with an elbow strike.
McReady escapes the clinch and we're back to striking.
McReady throws a right and a left that VanDerbeek avoids nicely. The fight moves into the clinch position. VanDerbeek lands a glancing elbow in the clinch. VanDerbeek landing knees to the body.
VanDerbeek tries to work over McReady's body with a swooping hook but it only glances the target. VanDerbeek unloads a knee to the mid-section. The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! VanDerbeek can't get the takedown.

McReady postures up.
VanDerbeek working for a triangle but McReady defends it easily.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Steve VanDerbeek dominated that round. The cut man is working on Steve VanDerbeek's cut. The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

VanDerbeek lands a nice elbow from the clinch. VanDerbeek struggles to land a body shot inside as McReady controls his hands.

VanDerbeek connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt. It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting VanDerbeek here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man. VanDerbeek lands a jab. VanDerbeek throws a leg kick that is checked and McReady moves into the clinch.
That's one minute gone in the round. VanDerbeek is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. McReady's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does. VanDerbeek misses with a double jab
and McReady counters with a three punch combination, finished off with a leg kick. Nice work. McReady is breathing heavily. VanDerbeek darts in and clinches McReady up against the cage. Steve VanDerbeek has scored more points in the clinch so far. McReady tries to stall but VanDerbeek uses the opportunity to gain a better position.
McReady lands an elbow inside. McReady tries to circle away but VanDerbeek has him pinned against the cage. VanDerbeek lands a good knee to the midsection. McReady won't want to take too many of those. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! With the two fighters working up against the cage, VanDerbeek just misses with a elbow thrown towards McReady's brow. VanDerbeek lands a damaging elbow.
It looks like Ryan McReady has been cut. A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors. VanDerbeek throws an elbow but it's blocked.
VanDerbeek drags the fight down to the ground.
VanDerbeek pushes a forearm under McReady's chin to create some space. He's escaped his hips and pivoted quickly for an armbar! Can he extend the arm? Yes, McReady is tapping out! Damn, that was fast!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Steve VanDerbeek! A less than humble Steve VanDerbeek misjudged his post fight interview somewhat and came across a little too arrogant whilst trying to hype up his own abilities.
