PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Carter Merritt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jayvon Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jayvon Smith was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Jayvon Smith!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Lou da Vinci and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Merritt's guard.

Smith wants to get up but he can't break Merritt's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Merritt looking to hit a scissor sweep but Smith is one step ahead there.

Smith walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Merritt checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side.

Merritt bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

Merritt goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Smith has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Merritt but great work by Smith.

The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
Smith looking to control but instead Merritt has slipped a leg in, to regain half guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Merritt tries to roll over but Smith keeps him under control.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Jayvon Smith wasn't active enough on the ground.

Merritt gets in close and instigates a clinch.

Smith is fighting off a takedown attempt but Merritt is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Smith to the mat. Smith regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Merritt is looking to stand back up... there's a bit of a scramble and Smith dives into side control.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Merritt shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Smith napping and manages to drive through into side control!
Merritt throwing strikes but Smith manages to buck up and roll into a nice reversal - now he's on top in side control!
The referee asks Smith politely if he wouldn't mind getting on with it and actually doing something. Smith prefers to stall for the moment though.
Let's hope that Smith has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

Smith has taken the fight to the clinch.

Merritt tries a body shot but Smith blocks it.

Smith manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Merritt on his heels. He'll look to pass Merritt's guard now, I'm sure.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Jayvon Smith hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Smith tries to get to full guard but Merritt has control of the leg.
Merritt is thwarting Smith's attempts to control the position.
Smith works his way to full guard. Good work.

Smith is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Merritt is controlling him.
Smith has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
Merritt has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.

Smith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Merritt gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Smith is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.

Jayvon Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Merritt's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!

Merritt postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smith is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Merritt, into his guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smith loading up with the ground and pound but he's missing more than he's landing in this flurry.
Smith passes Merritt's right leg, so he's now in half guard.
Smith is controlling the pace.

Smith is working for a kimura but Merritt is defending it quite comfortably.
Carter Merritt has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Jayvon Smith is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
