Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
28 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jesus Pope! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
28 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Kosti Lom! The judges for this bout are Daniel Blasius, Paul Aken and Radbod Blank.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Lom misses with an uppercut. Pope saw that one coming. Lom throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Kosti Lom seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Lom throws a shot from downtown. Pope moves away and avoids it. Lom misses the shot to the body. Lom throws a hook to the side of Pope's head but Pope sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully. Lom attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin. Pope checks the leg kick. Lom throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Lom misses with a left hand and Pope counters with a nice single leg takedown and he's in Lom's guard now. It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup. Lom looking to hit a scissor sweep but Pope is one step ahead there. Pope really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pope throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Pope is looking to pass into half guard but Lom pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Lom is in guard. Pope trying to control the position.
Pope looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Lom is stalling in the full guard. Pope trying to control the position here. Pope not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pope looking for a sweep. Not yet Pope, not yet. Pope looking for subs off his back but Lom has passed one foot through into half guard.
Pope is looking for a sweep. Lom is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Pope is working hard here to advance position. Lom tries to stand but can't do so whilst Pope controls his leg. Pope is looking to get full guard. It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Lom jumps into side control! You can see the frustration on Pope's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Lom is staying tight to Pope's torso, preventing him from escaping.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pope is looking to reverse the position. Lom decides to take the fight back to the feet. Pope blocks a jab. Lom is looking to clinch but Pope is avoiding it.
Lom gets a clinch. Pope tries to land knees in the clinch but Lom avoids the damage to the body. Pope has a couple of punches blocked by Lom.
Lom doesn't land with the attempted body shot.
Lom tries to throw a body punch but Pope avoids it by throwing Lom back against the cage. Lom lands an elbow inside that Pope shrugs off.
It looks like Jesus Pope has been cut. Pope lands a right hand.
It looks like Kosti Lom has been cut. Pope swings wildly with an uppercut but Lom uses good head movement to avoid it.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Lom tried to land a shot to the body but connects with Pope's elbow. Lom goes for a body shot but it's blocked.
Pope misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Pope wants a takedown.
Pope misses with a hook to the ribs.
With the two fighters working up against the cage, Lom just misses with a elbow thrown towards Pope's brow. Lom gets an overhook and lands an elbow to the side of the head. The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Lom blocks the elbow strike.
Pope is trying to force a seperation but Lom has the dominant position. Lom is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath. Pope looking to stall.
The fighters are starting to get sweaty, which will make takedowns a bit more tricky. Lom working some nice short punches in the clinch. Lom looks to throw an elbow but misses. Lom stays in close to his opponent and throws a right hand to the body. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Lom tries to land a shot to the body but it's blocked. Pope misses with a hook to the ribs.
Both fighters working to control the clinch. Pope blocks an elbow strike. I was talking to Pope's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. Lom comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Kosti Lom dominated that round. Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval. That's time! Back to the action!
Lom throws a leg kick but Pope sees it coming and checks it nicely. Lom tried to score with a low kick but Pope checks it. Lom's jab looks to have found its range, popping Pope under the eye.
Jesus Pope's cut is getting worse. Lom fails in his attempt to clinch. Lom moves in looking to clinch but Pope pushes him off. A combination from Lom does no damage. Lom throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Lom's corner calls for a 1-2. Lom obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range. Lom rushes Pope and presses him up against the cage.
That's one minute gone in the round. Pope is looking to control Lom's arms but Lom gets an underhook and turns him. Now Pope has his back to the cage. Lom cracks Pope with a nice body shot. Pope tries a shoulder strike but it doesn't do any damage. Lom is leaning against Pope and scores with a nice uppercut to the body. Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here. Lom lands a hook to the body. It's hard to tell if that hurt Pope or not. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Lom lands an elbow inside that Pope shrugs off. With the fighters clinched against the cage, Lom creates a bit of distance for himself and scores with a nice uppercut.
Jesus Pope's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it. Lom creates a bit of space for himself and sneaks an elbow through Pope's defenses.
Jeez, Jesus Pope's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Jesus Pope's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
