PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Johnny Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Advice Mallard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Smith's entrance music is Smoke the Fire. A fine choice. The key to victory for Johnny Smith has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 28 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Johnny Smith!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Advice Mallard!
The judges for this bout are Ben Watson, Steve Erwin and John Mangel.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Smith throws a series of punches but Mallard avoids them all with ease.

Smith instigates a clinch.
Mallard tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Smith just stands there and leans against the cage.
Mallard tries to pull guard but Smith won't allow it.

Smith has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Mallard uses from the top position.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.
Mallard stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Mallard keeps trying to improve his position.
Mallard won't allow Smith to sweep him here.
Smith is trying to control the position but Mallard postures up.

Mallard drops back looking for a leg! Smith is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Smith manages to kick Mallard off! Mallard jumps back into Smith's guard.
Mallard stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Smith swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Smith can't keep his opponent in guard - Mallard advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.
Smith is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Finch Farm, so we'll see if he gets out of it.

Smith is defending against the submission attempts here by Mallard.

Mallard is trying to work for a kimura but Smith is defending well.
Mallard wants to pass the guard but Smith is defending well.
Smith is trying to stand.
Smith tries to get to full guard but Mallard has control of the leg.

Mallard is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Smith defends it well.
Smith wants to get back to his feet.

Smith gets full guard.
Mallard pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Smith is keeping the position for now.
Smith looking to control.
Smith is looking to stand up but Mallard isn't so interested in that idea.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Smith trying to keep a closed guard but Mallard is proving a slippery customer.

Mallard is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Smith controls Mallard momentarily but Mallard frees himself.

Smith working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Mallard doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Mallard manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.
Smith might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Mallard is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Mallard postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Smith is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Mallard, into his guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Smith wants to stand and escape but instead Mallard has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

Mallard avoids a guillotine attempt easily.

Mallard has gone for a leg lock! Smith slips out almost immediately though and dives into Mallard's guard.
Smith trying to control the position from guard on top but Mallard is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Smith has a momentary lapse of concentration, allowing Mallard to throw up a leg and lock on what appears to be a pretty tight triangle! Smith is fighting it off but it's all too little too late - Mallard pulls down on the head and he's put Smith to sleep! This one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle). Advice Mallard!
