PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Carter Merritt (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tom Brands (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Tom Brands has the eye of the tiger tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Carter Merritt!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Tom Brands!
The judges for this bout are Reed Andrews, Eddie Farnsworth and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Brands feints and as Merritt raises his hands in defense, Brands changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Merritt will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Brands throws a big right hand that misses.
Brands controlling from the top position.
Merritt is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Brands trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Brands postures up.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Merritt shoots in looking for a takedown. Brands tries to sprawl out of it but Merritt keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Brands manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Merritt closes the distance and clinches up with Brands, looking for a takedown. Merritt pushes Brands against the cage but Brands circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Merritt avoids a punch combination nicely.
Brands throws a jab, cross combination which is slipped
and Merritt connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

Merritt closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Brands did well to prevent Merritt getting side control.
Brands blocking the ground and pound attempt from Merritt.
Merritt throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
Brands looks like he's trying to stand up.

Merritt is trying to work for a kimura but Brands is defending well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Brands is trying to stand.

Brands is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Merritt is looking to clinch but Brands is avoiding it.
Merritt fails with an attempt to clinch.
Merritt takes a really solid shot there but just smiles back and shrugs his shoulders.
Brands misses with a takedown attempt - Merritt sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses.
Brands leaves Merritt with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carter Merritt. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Brands walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Nice takedown defense from Brands. No joy for Merritt on that attempt.
Merritt gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Brands counters with a shoot takedown into half guard.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Brands is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Merritt tries to score a power double leg takedown but Brands sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Merritt somewhat.
Merritt has his takedown stuffed

and Brands counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Merritt!
Brands happy to just control the position for now.
Brands's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Merritt is trying to improve his position.
Brands taking a breather here.

Tom Brands has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Merritt will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Carter Merritt. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Merritt goes for a double leg but Brands avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Brands continues to drive forward.
Brands has Merritt pressed against the cage, preventing Merritt from circling away and getting back to striking at range.

Brands stays in close to Merritt's body and controls the position.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Tom Brands hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.
Merritt shoots and misses

and Brands counters with a shoot takedown. Merritt fights it but they end up in guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Brands is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.
Merritt looking to hit a scissor sweep but Brands is one step ahead there.

Merritt is active off his back here, looking for submissions.
Brands slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Tom Brands wasn't active enough on the ground.

Brands dives in and scores a takedown into Merritt's guard.


Merritt is rocked!
Brands sitting in guard here, content to control.
Oh Merritt is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Tom Brands has got the better of the ground game so far.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Tom Brands was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Brands lands with a right and another and another! Merritt is in big trouble! Brands lands again and this time it's lights out for Merritt! A quality knockout there for Brands.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:44 of round 2, we have a winner by way of KO (Strikes). Tom Brands!
