PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Colin Sheppard (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kamil Lopatka (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Colin Sheppard!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Kamil Lopatka!
The judges for this bout are Ryoma Takatsuka, Jeff Smith and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Sheppard tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Lopatka manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.
Sheppard moves out of range of the strikes.

Lopatka tries to keep at a distance but Sheppard has taken the fight into the clinch.

Sheppard gets control of Lopatka's arms and successfully pulls guard. Sheppard will no doubt be looking for submissions off his back.
Lopatka trying to control but Sheppard is working from the bottom.
Lopatka slips nicely into half guard.
Lopatka wants to free his trapped foot but Sheppard is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Lopatka content to sit in half guard and control for a moment.

Lopatka is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Sheppard is just riding it out for now. Lopatka eventually gives up the hold.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lopatka tries to pass to full mount but Sheppard defends it.

Lopatka wants to work for an arm triangle but Sheppard is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Lopatka is trying to work for a kimura but Sheppard is defending well.
Sheppard is trying to stand back up but Lopatka is controlling him
Sheppard is trying to maintain the position but Lopatka is very close to passing his half guard.
Lopatka is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen.

Lopatka is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Sheppard defends it well.
Lopatka seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Sheppard does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Lopatka is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.
Neither fighter is being very active at the moment, with Lopatka in particular looking to stall.

Lopatka is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Sheppard has managed to free his arm - good work.

Lopatka passes to side control.
Sheppard holds on to Lopatka's head and controls the position momentarily.

Lopatka tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Lopatka trying to control the action but Sheppard is working from the bottom.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Lopatka is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Sheppard knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.

Kamil Lopatka dominated that round.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Sheppard gets his head snapped back by a nice shot there.
Lopatka looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Lopatka closes the distance and clinches.

Sheppard pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Sheppard is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Lopatka.

A jab from Lopatka misses.
Sheppard swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Lopatka attempts a leg kick but it's missed by a good margin.
Colin Sheppard seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
A head kick misses from Sheppard.
Sheppard looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily.
Lopatka fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Sheppard manages to avoid it.
Sheppard throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Lopatka sees it coming and avoids it easily.

The step up in weight doesn't seem to be a problem for Lopatka. He's performing admirably here against the bigger man.
Sheppard throws a head kick but Lopatka moves out of range.

Lopatka throws a shot from downtown. Sheppard moves away and avoids it.
The fight stays on the outside here - Sheppard looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
Sheppard looks to land a right hand but Lopatka moved out of range.

Sheppard moves into the clinch successfully.

Sheppard breaks the clinch.
Lopatka throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Sheppard's waist but Sheppard gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Lopatka off to one side.
Kamil Lopatka is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Lopatka throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Sheppard.

Sheppard gets to the clinch - let's see what his plan is here.
Sheppard really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Sheppard ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Sheppard no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.
Lopatka works a leg free and moves into half guard.
Lopatka throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.

The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Sheppard won't allow Lopatka to pass to mount.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Lopatka passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Sheppard!

Kamil Lopatka showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Lopatka shoots in looking for a takedown. Sheppard tries to sprawl out of it but Lopatka keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sheppard manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Lopatka ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sheppard rushes Lopatka and presses him up against the cage.

Sheppard has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Lopatka uses from the top position.
Lopatka wants to control from the top but Sheppard keeps moving.

Lopatka trying to control the position from guard on top but Sheppard is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Sheppard will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Kamil Lopatka wasn't active enough on the ground.
Lopatka throws a series of punches but Sheppard avoids them all with ease.
Sheppard fails in his attempt to clinch.

Lopatka dips down and scores with a jab to the body.
Lopatka on the wrong end of a decent looking cross there.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Sheppard.

Sheppard moves into the clinch successfully.

Sheppard breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Lopatka takes a step towards his opponent and connects with a left hand, before circling away.
Sheppard shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Sheppard jabs Lopatka to the body, keeping him at a distance.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Sheppard walks into a jab.
Lopatka closes this distance looking for a takedown but Sheppard circles away.
A right-left combo lands from Lopatka.
Sheppard misses with an uppercut. Lopatka saw that one coming.
The fight stays on the outside here - Sheppard looks like he's thinking about clinching though.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Sheppard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Colin Sheppard. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Lopatka pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Sheppard back to the cage. Lopatka follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.

Lopatka fails with the takedown.

Lopatka rushes Sheppard and pushes him back against the cage in a clinch.
Lopatka is trying to pull guard but Sheppard turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Lopatka tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Sheppard's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Colin Sheppard has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Kamil Lopatka is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Sheppard doesn't manage to clinch there - Lopatka circles away.

Kamil Lopatka comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I've got Lopatka winning every round here. Surely the decision will go his way and he'll pick up a well deserved decision victory. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
