Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Matthew McConnell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Frank Benoit (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Frank Benoit told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of
2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Matthew McConnell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of
8 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Frank Benoit!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Yuuki Gou and Shigeki Sano.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
McConnell tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Benoit doesn't succeed with the takedown
and McConnell cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
McConnell looks to land a combination but Benoit avoids it well.
McConnell gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Benoit to score an easy takedown into full guard.
McConnell is trying to keep Benoit in close.
Benoit trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Benoit controls the pace of the fight for a moment.
Benoit lands a nice shot whilst sitting in his opponent's guard.

Let's hope that Benoit has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
McConnell not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Well, the referee has seen enough. Neither fighter is active enough on the ground so he's stood them back up.
McConnell leaves Benoit with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.
Benoit drives through with a takedown into McConnell's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

McConnell seems a little lost for a moment, as Benoit dominates the positioning.

Benoit wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by McConnell, who protects the arm well.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
McConnell is not content to let Benoit control the position.

McConnell tries to bum rush Benoit with a series of wild strikes but Benoit uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
McConnell rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Benoit moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Frank Benoit seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Frank Benoit very nearly forgot to thank Elite Canadian Threads amongst all the excitement of his win but just as the interview came to a close, he screamed their name. Hopefully he'll get a few nice freebies in the mail as a thank you.
Matthew McConnell was interviewed post fight and said 'It's never fun losing but, you know I love this sport so I'm going to keep training and try to come back with a win.'.
