Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Homer Simpson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Mike Mad! The judges for this bout are Bart Greer, Sandra Marshall and Santiago Holmes.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mad closes the distance and clinches. Mad putting his Muay Thai to good use. He has Simpson in a tight clinch and is doing some damage with knees to the body. Mad landing knees to the body.
Mad lands a nice elbow. We've been hearing reports that Simpson has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Mad comes over the top with an elbow. That landed flush. Simpson jumps guard but Mad turns him against the cage and keeps the fight standing. Mad is trying to slow down the pace in the clinch, to catch his breath. Simpson fails to pull the fight into his guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Mad stalling.
Mad lands a damaging elbow. Simpson lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Simpson thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas. Simpson stalling. Simpson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Mad is just riding it out for now. Simpson eventually gives up the hold. Mad is trying to stand back up but Simpson is controlling him
That's one minute gone in the round. Simpson seems to be working for a kimura but Mad defends the submission attempt. Simpson sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Mad defending well though. Mad is looking to escape. Mad really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Simpson. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Simpson is just sitting in half guard, waiting for something to happen. Mad won't allow Simpson to pass to mount. Simpson perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there. Simpson wants to free his trapped foot but Mad is holding on for dear life with his legs. Mad has been taking part in the yoga sessions down at Clean and Green. Presumably he's going to look for a slick submission... Or maybe he's looking to avoid one.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Simpson stops Mad from getting back to his feet.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Mad can do anything to dispel that myth. Mad pushes Simpson off but Simpson dives into side control.
Simpson throwing strikes but missing, from side control. Simpson works to advance to full mount. Mad defends for a few seconds but eventually he succumbs. Simpson controlling from mount. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Mad really wants to buck Simpson off and get back to his feet. Simpson controlling from the full mount. Mad's corner are shouting for him to stand up but that's bad cornering - how is he meant to stand up when he's mounted? He should be looking to improve his position on the ground before trying to stand back up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Simpson tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Simpson is working on an americana here. Ooh, that looks pretty nasty! Nope, Mad has managed to escape the submission attempt.
Simpson controlling the position easily from mount. Simpson looking to secure an arm triangle but Mad defends it well. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Simpson has control of Mad's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Mad regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Simpson trying to control but Mad is having none of it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mad is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. Simpson controlling his opponent. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Mad is squirming around, avoiding Simpson's attempts to control the action. Mad is trying to escape but when you're mounted that's not too easy.
The crowd are going absolutely nuts as the round comes to an end - what a fantastic round of action! Simpson controlling his opponent. Mad is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Homer Simpson dominated that round. The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!
Mad closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage. Simpson drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Mad gets the underhooks and prevents it.
Mad prevents the takedown attempt.
Simpson fails to pull the fight into his guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Homer Simpson. That's going to take a lot out of him. Mad connects with a nasty looking knee right to Simpson's face.
Simpson takes an elbow to the temple. Simpson decides to pull guard. Mad wants to stand but Simpson has a closed guard, so he can't escape. Mad wants to stand up, so he's looking to wriggle free of Simpson's closed guard. He's half up but Simpson has locked on to an arm! Uh oh! Simpson pivots and extends the arm, Mad falls face first to the mat and taps??... does he?? YES! He's tapping! Excellent counter grappling there by Simpson! Well done that man!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:57 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Homer Simpson! Homer Simpson was full of energy after the big win and talked about how he thinks he can do big things in this sport. The crowd were appreciative of his determination to succeed.
