Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Stefan Edberg! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Karl Katze! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Katze steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Edberg. Edberg works Katze's body with a nice hook. Katze has closed the distance and engaged Edberg in a clinch.
Edberg is trying to work out of this bad position, with his back against the cage. Edberg breaks from the clinch.
Katze tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion. Edberg works Katze's body with a nice hook. Edberg gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. Katze pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Edberg is keeping the position for now. Katze is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Edberg is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Edberg has escaped and now he's on top! We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Edberg trying to control the position from guard on top but Katze is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
That's one minute gone in the round. Katze looking for a sweep. Not yet Katze, not yet. Katze striking off his back but it's not causing Edberg any problems. Katze looking to hit a scissor sweep but Edberg is one step ahead there. Katze is persisting with the attempt to improve his position. Katze has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Edberg is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Katze. Katze tries to bench press Edberg off him but Edberg keeps the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up. Edberg throws out a powerful jab.
It looks like Karl Katze has been cut. Edberg throws a lazy right hand but Katze sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily. Katze is looking to clinch. Edberg scores with a hook. Katze fails with a takedown attempt from distance. Katze tries to close the distance and clinch up but Edberg swats him away and circles back towards the center. Edberg throws a nasty head kick that just misses. He throws another kick to the head of his opponent and almost takes it off! Katze crumples to the floor and the fight is over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:37 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Head Kick). Stefan Edberg!
