Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Derwin Davis! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Boxing Sparring! The judges for this bout are Alyssa Summers, Jonathan Paton and Columbo Gatti.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! We've got one fighter who appears to only be looking to counter and the other not looking particularly aggressive either, so we could be in for a dull fight. Davis shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Sparring as he jumps to the side. Davis darts in and clinches Sparring up against the cage. Sparring breaks from the clinch.
Davis will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Davis shoots in looking for a takedown. Sparring tries to sprawl out of it but Davis keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Sparring manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Derwin Davis. That's going to take a lot out of him. Davis shoots in and drives through. Sparring sprawls well.
That's one minute gone in the round. Sparring stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Sparring wants it to stay on the feet. Davis shoots in looking for a double leg takedown. Sparring defends it nicely. Davis fakes a strike and closes the distance, dragging Sparring to the ground. Davis is now in Sparring's guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Sparring is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Davis is controlling him. Davis engaging in some classic timewasting tactics. Davis working from the guard for now, landing some ground and pound. Sparring is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Davis is controlling him. Sparring really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Davis. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Davis controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling. Sparring is looking to stand back up but Davis counters by passing into half guard. Oops... bit sloppy there by Sparring. Sparring is trying to stand.
Davis will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Davis slows the pace down in half guard. Davis seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Sparring is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
