Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Newton Guthrie! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
8 - 11 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Quinton Rampage! The judges for this bout are Wesley Smith, Cecil Peabody and Alan Glass.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Rampage looks to land a combination but Guthrie avoids it well. Guthrie tries to close the distance and clinch up but Rampage swats him away and circles back towards the center. Rampage misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Rampage throws a right and a left that Guthrie avoids nicely. Guthrie slips a jab and a cross from Rampage.
Guthrie tries to clinch up against the ropes, rushing in to close the distance. Rampage manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Rampage changes levels and scores with a jab to the body. Rampage connects with a body shot that sends Guthrie's belly button to the back. Rampage scores with a jab to the jaw. Rampage cracks Guthrie with an open hand slap.
It looks like Newton Guthrie has been cut. Guthrie closes the distance and clinches. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Guthrie using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Rampage has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Rampage wants to get back to striking at distance but Guthrie won't allow it.
Guthrie is trying to drag Rampage to the mat but Rampage just about manages to keep his footing. He used the ropes to his advantage there. Guthrie tries for a takedown. No joy.
That's one minute gone in the round. Rampage tries to break free but Guthrie pushes him back against the ropes. Guthrie fails to pull guard.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Newton Guthrie. That's going to take a lot out of him. Guthrie is working for takedown but Rampage is calmly controlling the position for now. Rampage is trying to break the clinch but Guthrie is controlling him. Rampage has had enough of the clinch but Guthrie keeps him there for the moment. We've been hearing reports that Guthrie has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. A frustrated look appears on Rampage's face as he tries to break the clinch. Guthrie has Rampage pressed against the ropes, preventing Rampage from circling away and getting back to striking at range. Guthrie breaks from the clinch.
A jab-cross combination lands for Rampage and sends Guthrie crashing to the mat! Rampage follows him down to the mat - Guthrie regains half guard but he's not out of trouble yet!
Guthrie is rocked! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Rampage wants to stand up but Guthrie is controlling the position.
Oh Guthrie is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Rampage decides to stand up. I'm just looking down at my notes here and I see that.... oh! Rampage has cracked Guthrie with a big right, followed by a left! He's out on his feet! Rampage lands another huge swinging hook and Guthrie tumbles to the canvas! The ref dives in to save Guthrie, before Rampage can land any more shots!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Quinton Rampage! An out of breath Quinton Rampage thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
