Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of New York, Fu Man! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Eddy Hwang! The judges for this bout are Paul Gruel, Ryoma Takatsuka and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hwang feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Man's calf. Hwang throws the kick towards the body but Man avoids it. Hwang cracks the inside of Man's front leg. Hwang throws a low kick but his opponent is out of range.
Hwang throws the kick towards the body but Man avoids it. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Hwang. Hwang tries to land a front kick but Man steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed. Hwang delivers a nice body kick. Man blocks a low kick nicely. Man tries to close the distance and clinch but Hwang swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away. Hwang lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt. Hwang throws a head kick that misses. A looping hook to the body misses from Man. Hwang does a little dance to reset his feet. Hwang throws a low kick but Man avoids it. Hwang lands with a nice body kick. Hwang has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight. Hwang throws a body kick but he wasn't in range.
That's one minute gone in the round. Man gets a clinch. Hwang is trying to break free. Hwang breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Hwang looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.
Man misses with a wild body shot. Hwang throws a quick inside leg kick. Man blocks a head kick by Hwang.
Hwang avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Man blocks the body kick.
Man shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. Man stops Hwang from standing up. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Man content to strike from guard, landing some decent shots. This has been an exciting period of action! Man with a nice head shot there.
Hwang is rocked! Hwang wants to stand and escape but Man is having none of it. Hwang is still in real trouble! Can Man finish him? Hwang is scooting his butt against the cage and has managed to get back to his feet. Man presses him back against the cage, presumably looking to take the fight back to the mat. Hwang seems to have recovered his senses. Man lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Man thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hwang's head. Man thows a huge punch but Hwang dodges it nicely.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Hwang is not content to let Man control the position. We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Hwang can do anything to dispel that myth. Hwang is looking to escape. Hwang is using up a lot of energy trying to get back to his feet. Perhaps he should improve his position first. Man working the head and body with strikes. Hwang is trying to stand up here but Man is controlling him well. Man lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Man lands a massive shot from half guard that has rocked Hwang! More strikes land and this one is all over! Man jumps to his feet and is applauded loudly by the crowd!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Fu Man! A determined Fu Man didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
